This 5 night, self-guided cycling break starts and ends in the historic city of Prague with three nights spent in the village of Karlstejn deep in Central Bohemia. Leisurely cycle rides lead you along the Vltava and Berounka Rivers, through the protected Český kras Forest to quaint villages and towns. Explore the Czech Republic’s fascinating capital and the surrounding countryside.

Spend a night in Prague exploring the Czech capital’s gorgeous old town and other sights before cycling out along the Vltava River into the rolling countryside of rural Bohemia.

Your first day’s ride will lead you to the riverside village Karlstejn which will be your base for the next three nights. Daily circular rides will lead you along cycle paths and quiet lanes into the surrounding countryside. You’ll discover the secluded Monastery and hermit cave at Svaty Jan Pod Salou, learn the story of the brooding, abandoned Velka Amerika quarry, and ride through rural bohemian villages as well as the bustling market town of Beroun. The countryside is undoubtedly beautiful, with its rolling hills, forests and rivers, forming a romantic backdrop to your Czech cycling adventure.

Day 1: Arrive Prague

Prague - Czech R

Upon arrival make your way into Prague and check-in to your hotel. The rest of day is yours to explore the fascinating and enchanting capital of the Czech Republic. Make your way to the beautiful and lively  square in the centre of the Old Town. Admire the stunning Gothic, Romanesque and Baroque buildings and don’t miss the ornate astronomical clock (hi-tech from the 15th century). Afterwards you can take a stroll across the Charles Bridge. Explore the network of winding alleys and lanes and find a cosy restaurant or bar to relax and soak up the atmosphere. You are sure to be seduced by the unpretentious, natural charm of this warm and welcoming city.

Day 2: Prague – Karlstejn, 20 miles/35 kms

Karlstejn Castle - Czech Republic

Karlstejn Castle

In the morning you will be met at your hotel by our local representative who will transfer you to the place where the welcome briefing is provided, along with your bikes and route notes. He or she will also be happy to help you adjust the bike to your liking and answer any additional questions you may have before you set off for your first cycle ride. Today’s route is an easy and relaxing ride alongside the Vltava River, the longest river in the Czech Republic. A few miles south of Prague you leave the Vltava and follow the smaller, winding Berounka River through pretty countryside to the quiet village of Karlstejn located in the protected Český kras Forest and your base for the next three nights. After checking in you are free to relax or explore your surroundings. Karlstejn Castle is definitely worth a look. Built by Charles IV to store jewels, it is undoubtedly an enchanting place with distinct fairy-tale quality about it.

Day 3: Karlstejn – Svaty Jan Pod Skalou Valley roundtrip, 19 miles/30 kms

Svaty Jan pod Skalou - Czech R

Svaty Jan pod Skalou

Today’s ride will require a little more exertion than yesterday’s gentle riverside meander. You set off through the Český kras Forest, after a while you will come across a limestone quarry called Velka Amerika (Big America) where political prisoners were put to work by the communist regime. After an exhilarating downhill ride through the forest you reach Svaty Jan Pod Skalou, a tiny peaceful village with a beautiful monastery built on a natural spring. Prior to the monastery’s construction, a hermit, searching for enlightenment, occupied a cave on the site. Visit the monastery and the cave before replenishing your water bottle from the cool clear spring nearby. You then enjoy a tranquil cycle ride back to Karlstejn where you spend your second night.

Day 4: Karlstejn – Beroun roundtrip, 21 miles/33 kms

Prague cycle break 8 - Czech Republic

Cycling along the Berounka River

Today’s circular cycle route leads you along quiet lanes, through rolling countryside and small rural villages. In the small village of Koneprusy you can take a break from cycling if you wish and visit the impressive cave system that was discovered after an explosion in 1950. Then cycle on to the market town of Beroun on the banks of the Berounka River and enjoy a stroll around its pretty, historic centre. In the afternoon a pleasant riverside cycle path leads you back downstream to Karlstejn.

Day 5: Karlstejn – Prague 25 miles/40 kms

Prague - Czech Republic

Prague’s astronomical clock

After breakfast you leave Karlstejn for an easy relaxing ride back to Prague. The route is different to your outbound journey, leading you through a pleasant rural landscape that slowly gives way to the spires and ancient buildings of the Czech capital. Spend the last night of your holiday in beautiful Prague. Maybe head to the New Town this time to see Wenceslas Square or the Jewish quarter where you can visit the house where the writer Franz Kafka lived. Alternatively you could simply find a cosy restaurant to celebrate completing your Czech cycling adventure.

Day 6: End of trip

After breakfast it’s time to check out and head for home or your next adventure.
