Day 1: Arrive Amsterdam

Amsterdam

After checking in to your hotel the rest of the day is yours. Take a stroll along the famous canals of this historic city, admiring the tall, narrow town houses – once the homes of rich merchants. If you like, you can join one of the many guided boat trips around the canals and in the evening you’ll find plenty of convivial pubs and bars to coose from as well as a dizzying choice of restaurants.

Day 2: Cycling in Amsterdam, 9 miles/14 kms

Amsterdam - Holland V*

Canals of Amsterdam

Today you cycle into the centre of Amsterdam from your hotel. You can then park your bike and explore the city’s famous sights. Rijksmuseum is certainly worth visiting and you can also see the Red Light District and the Anne Frank House. Stroll along the principal canals of Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht – as well as a few lesser-known but ultimately fascinating sights. At the end of the day it’s an easy ride back to your hotel.

Day 3: Day tour Waterland and Marken, 39 miles/62 kms

Marken

Marken

Todays route leads you via a short ferry journey to the northern part of Amsterdam from where you leave the city and pedal out into the polder countryside. Before long you find yourself pedalling along an idyllic cycle path on top of a huge dyke beside Lake IJssel. The route then leads you along a narrow causeway to the former island of Marken. The inhabitants here tend to wear traditional dress and you’ll also notice the houses are built on stilts to protect them from the rise and fall of the tides.

A short ferry ride delivers you to Volendam from where you cycle south to Broek, a picturesque little place featuring a maze of small canals punctuated by drawbridges and lined with brightly painted houses. The route then leads you back to your hotel in Amsterdam.

Day 4: Day tour De Zaanse Schans, 30 miles/48 kms

Zaanse Schans - Holland

Zaanse Schans

A pleasant circuit will take you inland to the museum-village of Zaanse Schans. Here you will find authentic and well-preserved architecture that will help you appreciate what Holland was like in a bygone era. There are working windmills, a wooden shoe workshop and yes, a cheese farm as well as some small museums. You can walk around freely and perhaps also sample some of the traditional specialities on offer. Afterwards, make your way back to Amsterdam for your last evening in this exciting city.

Day 5: End of trip

After breakfast it’s time to check-out and head for home or your next adventure.
