Overview

This bike and boat cycling holiday leads you around the serene and beautiful islands of South Dalmatia. Starting from the picturesque port of Trogir, this cycle cruise explores the islands of Solta, Hvar and Korčula. Each has it’s own unique character and flavour, providing a completely new cycling experience each day.

The islands of South Dalmatia are quiet, sparsely populated and achingly beautiful, the perfect arena for a relaxing bike and boat cycling holiday. There’s little or no traffic on the peaceful, rural lanes that lead you around each island revealing stunning sea views and picture perfect medieval villages seemingly after each bend in the road.

Typically, the boat will drop you off at one island port and then cruise around the island to meet you on the other side after your ride. Fancy a day off? No problem, just stay on board and relax while the boat cruises to the next port. There are also regular swim stops where the boat moors in a quiet bay, affording guests the unique experience of swimming directly from the boat in crystal clear waters.

Highlights of this holiday include serene cycling on the peaceful island of Šolta – where the scent of lavender and wild rosemary accompany your ride, the exhilarating descent to the historic port of Hvar Town, riding the length of Korčula island and exploring it’s atmospheric capital. The chance to go rafting in the Cetina Canyon is also great fun and you’re bound to enjoy the evening in Split, wandering the narrow streets of the historic old town. Swimming from the boat in the crystal clear waters of secluded bays is another experience that will live long in the memory.

Day 1: Trogir – Šolta Island

Trogir - Croatia

Trogir – Croatia

Fly to Split airport and then take a short taxi ride or public bus the 3 miles to Trogir. Check in is from 2pm to 2.30pm and at 3pm the crew cast off and we enjoy an afternoon cruise to the pretty port of Stomorska on the island of Šolta. After dinner why not step ashore for a stroll around the town?

Day 2: Islands of Šolta and Hvar – 13 & 13 miles/20 & 20 kms

Stari Grad – Hvar

After breakfast we disembark with the bikes for our first ride of the holiday. This easy, scenic, circular route leads us along quiet lanes lined with dry stone walls, olive groves and fig trees. The scent of lavender and rosemary fills the air making the ride truly memorable. Back on board we enjoy a lunchtime cruise to the charming port of Stari Grad on the island of Hvar. Her we disembark for the second ride of the day. Once again, it’s a pretty easy route, leading us along quiet roads to the small port of Jelsa. Can you resist succumbing to the fabulous ice cream parlor in the pretty town square? The return route leads us via a quiet coastal path to the quaint little port of Vrboska and then back to Stari Grad where our boat remains moored for the night.

Day 3: Islands of Hvar and Korčula, 14 miles/22 kms

Hvar - Croatia

Hvar town

Today’s ride is a step up from yesterday’s introductory rides and will definitely get the blood pumping a little more. Immediately after leaving the boat we begin to climb up a winding road that leads us up onto a ridge running the length of the island. The views get progressively more spectacular and aromatic lavender fields line the route attracting flights of brightly coloured butterflies. The winding descent to Hvar town on the other-side of the ridge is long and exhilarating. Hvar town is a vibrant place, with bustling quayside bars and a picturesque Spanish fortress standing guard above.

Enjoy a drink or snack in one of the fashionable quayside bars until our boat arrives. In the afternoon we enjoy a cruise across to the island of Korčula. Time allowing, we’ll drop anchor somewhere en-route for a refreshing swim-stop – one of the great pleasures of this type of holiday. We moor for the night in the pleasant port of Vela Luka.

Day 4: Korčula Island, 38 miles/60 kms

Korcula Town - Korcula - Croatia II*

Korcula

Today’s ride leads us along the length of what is widely considered to be Dalmatia’s most beautiful island. We cycle through aromatic pine forests and along the island’s scenic south coast where a string of tiny islands dot the surface of the coral blue sea. We’ll stop at a stunning taverna where lunch is at your own expense before pedalling on along the scenic coastal road enjoying more fabulous sea views.

The last section of today’s fabulous ride leads us across the island and down to the north coast where windsurfers and kitesurfers flit to and fro, enjoying the wind funnel effect between the island and the nearby mainland. After rounding a corner the beautiful medieval town of Korčula comes into view – along with our boat moored at the quayside waiting for us. After dinner we highly recommend stepping ashore for a stroll through the narrow alleys of this atmospheric old town.

Day 5: Brač Island, 17 miles/27 kms

Pucisca

Pučišća

Our day starts with a morning cruise to the island of Brač. After a refreshing swim-stop in a quiet bay we moor in the pleasant little port town of Sumartin on the island’s eastern tip and disembark with the bikes. An initial climb leads us up to the town of Selca where we then begin to follow a network of rural undulating roads and lanes along the coast to the picturesque town of Pučišća. The town is nestled in its own natural harbour and you’re sure to enjoy a night moored in this magical little place.

Day 6: Omiš – Split 15 or 27 miles/25 or 44 kms

Rafting the Cetina Canyon

Rafting the Cetina Canyon

During breakfast we leave Brač and cruise across to the port of Omiš on the Croatian mainland. From here we mount up and ride inland along the scenic Cetina River canyon. After about 11 miles (18 kms) you have a choice. You can either continue cycling along a scenic circular route that eventually leads you back to the boat at Omiš (another 26kms) or we can opt for a 4 hour rafting excursion on the Cetina river itself.

The rafting is great fun and each raft has a well trained instructor who ensures the trip is exhilarating but safe. The river and canyon are protected and the scenery and water clarity are amazing. The bikes are waiting for us at the end of the rafting experience and its a leisurely 5 miles (8 kms) back to the boat in Omiš.

We then cast off and cruise up the coast to Split where we moor for the night. Split is amazing and we highly recommend a tour of the famous palace of Roman Emperor Diocletian. The adjoining maze of narrow ancient streets that make up Split’s old town are incredibly atmospheric, never more so than after dark when all the cool little bars, clubs and restaurants come alive.

Day 7: Split – Mount Marjan – Trogir, 9 miles/15 kms

Trogir - Croatia

Trogir

After breakfast we disembark with the bikes for the final ride of the holiday to Mount Marjan. The route leads us along the quayside and then up into a large park that occupies the peninsula to the west of Split. The climb through the shady forest is rewarded with incredible views across the city and the surrounding islands.

Afterwards we enjoy a cruise back to the boat’s home port of Trogir. Lose yourself in the maze-like alleys of the ancient port and enjoy an ice cream or cold drink at one of the many open air cafes. The Captains’s farewell dinner is always an enjoyable affair, moored up on the bustling quayside adjacent to the lovely old town.

Day 8: Departure

After breakfast its time to disembark, by 9am, and head for home or your next adventure.

  • Flexitreks response - Many thanks for the feedback Anette and we're sorry that you found it a little harder than expected. We do believe that our 'moderate' rating for this tour is accurate given that we describe our moderate tours as follows:

'Suitable for regular cyclists, who are used to longer rides with regular climbs.'

  • Product comment - Excellent boat, San snova. The staff were a credit to the very lovely captain and owner of the boat. The food was awesome as well as the cleanliness, nothing was too much trouble. The cycle routes were more challenging than the north islands but having an e-bike was an excellent choice, what fun they are, highly recommend them. Love Croatia and the islands,a superb way to see them by bike. We were blessed with good weather too.
  • Flexitreks response - Thanks for the lovely review Fiona. We're also big fans of the San Snova - her crew and captain are wonderful and really add something to the holiday.

  • Product comment - Cycling was tough in places and there didn't seem to be many opportunities to self guide and take it easy. More main roads than I expected. The places we visited were lovely and cycling was a great way to see the islands - it would have been nice to take more time, particularly as the distances weren't too challenging. The boat was great and the food fantastic. Will definitely go again but will look carefully at the itinerary. One small point - it would have been nice to have some tea and coffee available after the rides.
  • Flexitreks response - Thanks for the review. Yes, this is a moderate tour and some of the rides are quite tough. Glad you enjoyed it overall though and rest assured we'll raise the issue of post-ride tea and coffee for next year's programme.
