Overview

The classic Danube cycle route. Cycle along what many consider to be the most beautiful stretch of the Danube river as it wends it’s way through Upper and Lower Austria along beautiful, fertile valleys, past charming medieval villages to the elegant city of Vienna.

The original, and still one of the most popular long distance leisure rides in Europe, the Danube cycle path is an easy, mostly traffic-free route along level paths close to the mighty river. Starting from Passau on the German/Austrian border, you follow the river downstream past the majestic Danube Loop, the medieval City of Linz and through the stunning Wachau Valley.

The video above was shot in July 2018 and depicts the sights and scenes along the route.

Along the way you can stop to explore charming riverside villages such as Grein, Spitz, Weisskirchen and Duernstein. At times you will cycle through open plains and meadows while other stretches lead you through steep-sided valleys lined with cascading vineyard terraces. At the end of the journey, elegant Vienna awaits to enthrall and fascinate.

Day 1: Arrive in Passau

Passau - Germany

Passau – Germany

Check in to your hotel and then take a stroll through the “City of Three Rivers”, so named because this is the point at which the the Inn and Ilz rivers flow into the Danube. The narrow cobbled streets and pretty squares of the old town are a delight to explore and we also recommend a climb to Veste Oberhaus, a medieval fortress and museum that offers a fantastic, panoramic view of the town and rivers.

Day 2: Passau – Danube Loop, 27 miles/43 kms

Easy Cycling Holidays in Europe

Danube Loop

Your first day’s ride follows the Upper Danube Valley to Schloegen, which sits on the famous Danube Loop, where the mighty river makes a 180 degree turn. On the way you will ride ride through Engelhartszell, a small riverside village. Nearby there is a monastery inhabited by silent but enterprising Trappist monks who make and sell some rather good liquors. The river valley is quite narrow here with tree lined, sloping hillsides and green meadows descending to the river.

Day 3: Danube Loop – Linz, 36 miles/58 kms

The Danube Valley

The Danube Valley

Today’s ride follows the river as it continues to wind its way through the picturesque tree-lined valley. After a few kilometers the valley begins to widen out considerably and soon you are cycling through an open plain with meadows on either side.  After a bend in the river, the city of Linz, your overnight stop, comes into view. Linz is the capital of Upper Austria with a lovely old town centre and bustling main square.

Day 4: Linz – Perg, 26 miles/42 kms

Cyclists - Danube cycle path

Cyclists on the Danube Cycle Path

The day starts with a short ride to Enns, the oldest town in Austria, where you can see imposing, Gothic town houses with magnificent baroque facades. You then cross the Danube by ferry to the pretty town of Mauthausen. Nearby you will find the former Mauthausen  Concentration Camp and Memorial – a thought-provoking place to stop for a break. A short ride across picturesque, undulating farmland brings you to the town of Perg where you stop for the night.

Day 5: Perg – Maria Taferl, 36 miles/58 kms

Grein

Grein

Cycle onwards through peaceful meadows and woodland beside the river to Grein, a baroque riverside village brimming with nostalgic charm. After Grein the valley narrows again for a while and you ride along densely wooded paths and lanes on both sides of the Danube. After a while the valley widens again the day’s ride concludes in the village of Marbach. From here you will be transferred up to the peaceful village of Maria Taferl from where you can enjoy marvelous views along the Danube Valley. You will overnight in this scenic spot .

Day 6: Maria Taferl – Krems, 29 miles/ 46 kms (plus boat trip)

Spitz

Spitz

Make sure your camera is charged and ready today as you will be cycling through the magnificent Wachau Valley which many consider to be one of the most beautiful stretches of the whole river. The day starts with a ride along the riverbank to the bustling town of Melk, famous for its magnificent baroque Abbey. Here you board a boat for a scenic cruise downstream into the Wachau. You disembark in the charming wine village of Spitz and begin a wonderful ride through the Valley to Krems. Along the way you’ll see romantic castles and palaces perched on strategic bluffs overlooking terraced vineyards and orchards that cascade down to charming villages such as Weißkirchen and Duernstein. Beautiful old taverns and Inns invite you to stop and enjoy hearty, Wachau hospitality along the way. The locals are justly proud of their wine so if you abstain during the day be sure to visit one of the many wine cellars in Krems to sample some of the fine local product in the evening.

Day 7: Krems – Tulln – Vienna, 27 miles/43 kms (plus train journey)

Johann Strauss - Vienna - Austria

Johann Strauss

Your final ride follows the river through a fertile valley, famous for its prolific vegetable production, to the town of Tulln. Here you hand back your bikes and board a train (not included)) for the short 30 minute journey into Vienna. Use the rest of the day to explore the beautiful city. The Schönbrunn Palace, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and the Imperial Palace are popular highlights. You may also want to take in the ‘Riesenrad’, the giant ferris wheel, made famous in the 1949 British film, ‘The Third Man’, and no trip to Vienna would be complete with out enjoying a coffee and cake in one of its famous, convivial and elegant coffee houses.

Day 8: Departure

After breakfast it’s time to check out and head for home or your next adventure.

  • Service comment - Area chosen was lovely. Food at some hotels was very dull and repetitive. Breakfasts were wonderful. Bikes were very good and service system efficient. Maps were too complicated to follow easily and very difficult for non German speakers. Free vouchers were very good and well chosen

  • Product comment - The holiday was enjoyable and very relaxing. Some of the hotels were difficult to locate with little or hard to follow directions but we found them all eventually. We could not locate the drop off point for our bikes on the last day and so cycled all the way to the hotel.
  • Flexitreks response - Service rating : Thank you.

Product : We're glad you found the holiday enjoyable and relaxing. We will try to make the directions to the bike drop-off point in Vienna clearer for future customers. That said, I also chose to cycle to my hotel instead of dropping the bike off and believe it saved my quite a lot of time. The bike paths in Vienna are excellent.

  • Service comment - Pre holiday service was great. Some of the paperwork was missing when we got to the first hotel (detailed route map and bike hire paperwork). This was resolved by the bike hire company and because we've been on a lot of cycling holidays we weren't too stressed out - but new cyclists probably would be.

  • Product comment - Loved the cycling, its by far the best cycle tour we have been on. Vienna RoomZ hotel is not the best choice though. Very industrial sort of location and miles away from train stations. Also not the cleanest hotel ever and room was overcrowded as they had put a third bed in a pretty small double room.ou
  • Flexitreks response - Service rating : Profuse apologies for the missing paperwork but glad it was resolved before you set off on your first ride.

Product : Glad you enjoyed it so much and message received regarding your hotel in Vienna.

Another time would get a map here to take with me, and probably a decent guide book as well
  • Flexitreks response - Thanks for the useful feedback Jonathon. We are liaising with our local supplier regarding the route notes for this trip and hope to have an improved version available next season.

  • Product comment - The route is beautiful and exceptional - especially for older cyclists. However, some hotel locations were not easy - in the middle of large busy towns with tram lines etc. We found the locally provided information very confusing.
  • Flexitreks response - Many thanks, we appreciate the feedback. The route notes for this route are being overhauled for 2018.

  • Product comment - We had a wondeful time but in one of the hotels we stayed in we were up in a loft room which was hot with only sky lights.
Other hotels were really suitable and authentic.
I would also suggest adding an extra day in certain places so you have time to have a proper look at the town or village.
  • Flexitreks response - Many thanks for the review. We agree that adding an extra day in certain places can be worthwhile and we are happy to offer advice on this subject.

Would recommend and look forward to using flexitreks again in the future.

  • Product comment - Great introduction to cycle touring and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone. Suitable from 8 to 80. We had conventional cycles with 24 gears but we were amazed by the number of people on eBikes. The route guide was a bit of a hoot trying to translate the German to English translation but generally worked well. Always a good idea to check out the route to each of your hotels from a well defined location (eg a bridge, town square, big church, etc..). Best scenery is during the first 2 days so get into relaxation-mode quickly and have the camera out! Crossing the river by ferry-boat or bridge was generally easy although one crossing via a power station did involve wheeling bikes (plural = chivalry is not dead!) up ramps at the side of several flights of steps (and down again). What's also nice is that whilst you are self-guided and have your own particular combination of hotels, you tend to bump into the same people several times during the tour. This gives plenty of scope for swapping stories and experiences during the evenings.

Would definitely do another cycle tour and would check out Flexitreks first!
  • Flexitreks response - Thanks for the lovely review Tim. Yes, e-bikes really are becoming the norm on certain routes and the Danube Cycle Path is definitely one of them.
