Overview

The classic Danube cycle route. Cycle along what many consider to be the most beautiful stretch of the Danube river as it wends it’s way through Upper and Lower Austria along beautiful, fertile valleys, past charming medieval villages to the elegant city of Vienna.

The original, and still one of the most popular long distance leisure rides in Europe, the Danube cycle path is an easy, mostly traffic-free route along level paths close to the mighty river. Starting from Passau on the German/Austrian border, you follow the river downstream past the majestic Danube Loop, the medieval City of Linz and through the stunning Wachau Valley.

The video above was shot in July 2018 and depicts the sights and scenes along the route.

Along the way you can stop to explore charming riverside villages such as Grein, Spitz, Weißenkirchen and Dürnstein. At times you will cycle through open plains and meadows while other stretches lead you through steep-sided valleys lined with cascading vineyard terraces. At the end of the journey, elegant Vienna awaits to enthrall and fascinate.

Easy cycling on traffic free cycle paths.

Day 1: Arrive in Passau

Passau - Germany

Passau – Germany

Check in to your hotel and then take a stroll through the “City of Three Rivers”, so named because this is the point at which the Inn and Ilz rivers flow into the Danube. The narrow cobbled streets and pretty squares of the old town are a delight to explore and we also recommend a climb to Veste Oberhaus, a medieval fortress and museum that offers a fantastic, panoramic view of the town and rivers.

Day 2: Passau – Wesenufer/Schlögen, 27 miles/43 kms

Bike Ferry at Engelhartszell

Bike Ferry at Engelhartszell

After breakfast you start to follow the Danube Cycle Path downstream. You’ll pass through a deep gorge, carved by the river over centuries, before arriving in the charming little village of Engelhartszell. Here you may choose to visit the nearby Monastery where  a silent but enterprising order of Trappist monks make and sell some rather good liquors. Cross the river using the quaint little ferry and enjoy some serene cycling on an idyllic cycle path beside the river as you continue eastwards. You’ll spend the night either in the little village of Wesenufer or slightly further on in the village of Schlögen.

Day 3: Wesenufer/Schlögen – Linz, 36 miles/58 kms

Danube Loop

Danube Loop lookout – worth the climb!

First stop on today’s route is the stunning Danube Loop at Schlögen. Here the great river makes a dramatic 180 degree turn and we highly recommend investing in the 20 minute hike up to the lofty look-out point in the woods to fully appreciate this majestic scene.

Afterwards, follow the riverside cycle path through a peaceful valley where nature still reigns supreme. This is leisure cycling at its best, stunning scenery, charming villages and easy cycling, far from hustle and the bustle of the modern world.

After a few kilometers the valley begins to widen out and soon you are cycling through an open plain with meadows on either side.  Stop in Aschach at one of the riverside cafes for some refreshment or lunch before continuing downstream.  After a bend in the river, the city of Linz, your overnight stop, comes into view. Linz is the capital of Upper Austria with a lovely old town centre and bustling main square.

Day 4: Linz – Perg, 26 miles/42 kms

Cyclists - Danube cycle path

Cyclists on the Danube Cycle Path

The day starts with a short ride to Enns, the oldest town in Austria, where you can see imposing, Gothic town houses with magnificent baroque facades. You then cross the Danube by ferry to the pretty town of Mauthausen. Nearby you will find the former Mauthausen Concentration Camp and Memorial – a thought-provoking place to stop for a break. A short ride across picturesque, undulating farmland brings you to the town of Perg where you stop for the night.

Day 5: Perg – Marbach/Maria Taferl, 36 miles/58 kms

Grein

Grein

Cycle onwards through peaceful meadows and woodland beside the river to Grein, a baroque riverside village brimming with nostalgic charm. After Grein the valley narrows again for a while and you ride along densely wooded paths and lanes on both sides of the Danube. After a while the valley widens again and the day’s ride concludes in the village of Marbach. You will either stay overnight in Marbach or you will be transferred up to the peaceful village of Maria Taferl and overnight in this scenic spot.

Day 6: Marbach/Maria Taferl – Krems, 29 miles/ 46 kms (plus boat trip)

Spitz

Spitz

Make sure your camera is charged and ready today as you will be cycling through the magnificent Wachau Valley which many consider to be one of the most beautiful stretches of the whole river. The day starts with a ride along the riverbank to the bustling town of Melk, famous for its magnificent baroque Abbey. Here you board a boat for a scenic cruise downstream into the Wachau. You disembark in the charming wine village of Spitz and begin a wonderful ride through the Valley to Krems. Along the way you’ll see romantic castles and palaces perched on strategic bluffs overlooking terraced vineyards and orchards that cascade down to charming villages such as Weißenkirchen and Dürnstein. Beautiful old taverns and inns invite you to stop and enjoy hearty Wachau hospitality along the way. The locals are justly proud of their wine so if you abstain during the day be sure to visit one of the many wine cellars in Krems to sample some of the fine local product in the evening.

Day 7: Krems – Tulln – Vienna, 18, 27, 45 or 50 miles/28, 43, 72 or 82 kms

Johann Strauss - Vienna - Austria

Johann Strauss

You have a few choices for your cycle ride today which follows the river through a fertile valley, famous for its prolific vegetable production.

You can cycle from Krems to Tulln (43 km) where you drop off your bikes and take the train (approximately €10 payable locally) from there into Vienna.

Alternatively, you can start by taking the train (approximately €10 payable locally) from Krems to Tulln, then cycle along the flat bike path (28 km), past the impressive spires of Klosterneuburg monastery to the Viennese suburb of Nussdorf, where you drop off your bikes. From Nussdorf take the tram into Vienna.

The third option is to cycle the whole way from Krems to Nussdorf on the bike path (72 km), drop off your bikes and then take the tram from there into Vienna.

Of course, you can choose to cycle the whole way from Krems to your hotel in Vienna (82 km). It’s all on a flat bike path.

In Vienna, use the rest of the day to explore the beautiful city. The Schönbrunn Palace, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and the Imperial Palace are popular highlights. You may also want to take in the ‘Riesenrad’, the giant ferris wheel, made famous in the 1949 British film, ‘The Third Man’, and no trip to Vienna would be complete without enjoying a coffee and cake in one of its famous, convivial and elegant coffee houses.

*Important note: E-bikes can only be returned at the drop-off point in Nussdorf on the outskirts of Vienna. It is not possible to return e-bikes in Tulln or at your hotel in Vienna.

Day 8: Departure

After breakfast it’s time to check out and head for home or your next adventure.

  • Product comment - A little confusing at the start as to which route to take but once on the move soon becomes a lovely cycle way. The info pack map didn't cover one of the hotels and the final drop off point was difficult to find. All that said the route was beautiful with plenty to see and not difficult

  • Product comment - It was a great holiday. Everything worked like clockwork as per the details of the holiday. Hotels were good on the whole apart from the first one which seemed more like a youth hostel and not very friendly. But this hotel appears to cater for large groups of cycling and boating tourists and I’m not sure they were adequately staffed for such large numbers. But the beds were comfortable which is the main thing. The hotel in Linz was quite a distance from the main square and directions weren’t easy to follow. We had to cancel one of our party and on our final day the hotel had cancelled everyone! But this was sorted fairly easily and we did get a room. I would go with this company again.

  • Product comment - Good Route - as recommended with excellent info and mostly
    To be constructive:
    Poor food & accommodation (Kennel) at Sloughl Resort;
More prominent details of transport uphill to Rose Hotel would be useful! Noted 1 rider on electric bike pushing rider on pedal bike!!
    Similarly info re location of "Kapt'n Ottos" Vienna bike drop off - + unhelpful & rather unpleasant;
BUT - Otherwise tip / top Entirely content with Flextreks!!
  • Flexitreks response - Service rating : Thank you, we try our best!
Product : Thanks for the feedback. Only super- fit types should attempt the ride up to Maria Taferl which is why we provide the transfer up the hill - the booklet does make this very clear. The Vienna bike drop-off point on Vienna's outskirts, close to the tram stop, is designed to avoid riders having to cycle through the busy city centre.

  • Product comment - Lovely area and lovel scenery
  • Flexitreks response - Many thanks for the review. I'm sorry you found the english guide book difficult to use, it was recently updated and we've actually been encouraged by the positive feedback we've been getting. We believe part of the problem stems from the fact that the Danube Cycle Path offers options on either river bank for most of the way through Austria. The guide book describes both options for each section and this can confuse people sometimes. We suggest reading both options thoroughly the night before and then opting for the north or south bank route, whichever appeals most.

Product : We're glad you found the holiday enjoyable and relaxing. We will try to make the directions to the bike drop-off point in Vienna clearer for future customers. That said, I also chose to cycle to my hotel instead of dropping the bike off and believe it saved my quite a lot of time. The bike paths in Vienna are excellent.

  • Service comment - Pre holiday service was great. Some of the paperwork was missing when we got to the first hotel (detailed route map and bike hire paperwork). This was resolved by the bike hire company and because we've been on a lot of cycling holidays we weren't too stressed out - but new cyclists probably would be.

  • Product comment - Loved the cycling, its by far the best cycle tour we have been on. Vienna RoomZ hotel is not the best choice though. Very industrial sort of location and miles away from train stations. Also not the cleanest hotel ever and room was overcrowded as they had put a third bed in a pretty small double room.ou
  • Flexitreks response - Service rating : Profuse apologies for the missing paperwork but glad it was resolved before you set off on your first ride.

  • Product comment - Great introduction to cycle touring and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone. Suitable from 8 to 80. We had conventional cycles with 24 gears but we were amazed by the number of people on eBikes. The route guide was a bit of a hoot trying to translate the German to English translation but generally worked well. Always a good idea to check out the route to each of your hotels from a well defined location (eg a bridge, town square, big church, etc..). Best scenery is during the first 2 days so get into relaxation-mode quickly and have the camera out! Crossing the river by ferry-boat or bridge was generally easy although one crossing via a power station did involve wheeling bikes (plural = chivalry is not dead!) up ramps at the side of several flights of steps (and down again). What's also nice is that whilst you are self-guided and have your own particular combination of hotels, you tend to bump into the same people several times during the tour. This gives plenty of scope for swapping stories and experiences during the evenings.

Would definitely do another cycle tour and would check out Flexitreks first!
  • Flexitreks response - Thanks for the lovely review Tim. Yes, e-bikes really are becoming the norm on certain routes and the Danube Cycle Path is definitely one of them.
