Overview

A cycle holiday from and to Lake Bled taking in the region’s beautiful lakes, serene alpine valleys and pretty alpine villages. Highlights of this bike tour include a ride through the stunning Bohinj Valley, exploring the medieval town of Škofja Loka, the alpine resort of Kranjska Gora and of course, beautiful Lake Bled itself. Easy, leisurely cycling in an alpine environment.

Lake Bled is Slovenia’s most famous attraction, and rightly so. This beautiful location is perfect in every way. But that’s not all Slovenia has to offer, and this cycle tour introduces you to some wonderful spots, some of which are definitely off the standard tourist trail.

Lake Bohinj is Bled’s lesser-known cousin but arguably as beautiful, while the forests and valleys of the Škofja Loka hills, the wide Sora plain and the beautiful alpine villages also enchant all visitors. The internationally famous resort of Kranjska Gora, in the far north of the country is another highlight, as is a visit to the incredible Vintgar Gorge.

Lake Bohinj

The route is suitable for cyclists with an average level of fitness. Most of the cycling is on relatively flat roads, and the route has been carefully chosen to avoid traffic and steep climbs as much as possible. On one day there is more climbing, but this is a long and gradual ascent to 750 metres, so not too arduous. If you fancy taking it easy that day then we can arrange a transfer to the top for you.

Day 1: Arrive Lake Bled

Cycling Holidays in Slovenia - Lake Bled

Lake Bled

On arrival in Bled make your way to your hotel. Bled is one of Slovenia’s undoubted highlights. This unique town is dominated by a cliff-top castle and set beside a stunning glacial lake, surrounded by mountains. Take a boat trip to the lake’s pretty island church, hike up to the castle for sweeping lake views and don’t forget to visit a teashop to sample the rather excellent local cream cakes.

Day 2: Bled – Ribčev Laz, 12 or 19 miles/19 or 35 kms

Ribicev Laz - Slovenia

Ribicev Laz – Slovenia

You’ll first be transferred by mini-bus up to the nearby Pokljuka plateau (12 km) from where you mount up for an enjoyable cycle ride down into the beautiful Bohinj Valley. Cycling along the valley floor you’ll pass through a succession of tiny alpine villages. At the end of this stunning valley you reach Lake Bohinj and the village of Ribčev Laz where you will overnight. If you wish to carry on cycling then you can cycle round the lake to the Savica waterfall and ascend Mount Vogel by cable car for stunning views across the forested valley to Mount Triglav, the highest of the Julian Alps. Return to Ribčev Laz and settle into your comfortable alpine hotel.

Day 3: Ribcev Laz – Škofja Loka, 35 miles/57 kms

Skofja Loka - Slovenia

Skofja Loka

This morning you cycle first along a beautiful, quiet valley away from Lake Bohinj to the pretty village of Bohinjska Bistrica then its an uphill ride to the Jelovica plateau where your efforts are rewarded with a cooling ride through a shady forest. After a while you reach the alpine hamlet of Sorica the birthplace of Ivan Grohar, a famous Slovenian painter who’s work is on display in a small gallery. There’s a perfect spot for a picnic stop near the statue of the painter just after the church – the view is wonderful! Continue down the pleasant valley alongside a mountain stream to Železniki a town that used to be known for its iron smelting works – an old furnace is still on display paying homage to the town’s past. Another 12 kilometers easy cycling down the valley brings you to the charming medieval town of Škofja Loka. If you still have some energy you could take on the climb to the castle overlooking the old town. In the evening the ancient narrow streets are a delight to explore on foot.

Day 4: Škofja Loka – Preddvor, 21 miles/33 kms

Lake Crnava

Lake Crnava

Head across the wide Sora plain for a flat ride with a backdrop of the dramatic Kamnik-Savinja Alps. You’ll ride past the bustling city of Kranj and stop for lunch at Glavni Trg, with its Gothic town square. Your route then takes you roughly north east, past Brdo Castle and to Preddvor, your stop for the night. Your hotel is close to the delightful Lake Crnava  – why not take a refreshing dip before dinner?

Day 5: Preddvor – Begunje, 27 or 34 miles /43 or 54 kms

Kropa - Slovenia*

Kropa

Follow a mostly flat route today with just a couple of lumpy sections, skirting along the Kamnik Savina Alps to the beautifully preserved old town of Radovljica and the quaint village of Kropa. Radovljica is the ideal spot for lunch, and we recommend the cosy restaurant in the shadow of the town’s looming castle. At the end of another rewarding day you’ll stop for the night in the pleasant village of Begunje.

Day 6: Begunje – Kranjska Gora, 27 or 36 miles /42 or 57 kms

Cyclist near Kranjska Gora

Taking a break near Kranjska Gora

Today’s route takes you between the Karawanke Mountains and Julian Alps to Slovenia’s best-known mountain resort – Kranjska Gora. It’s a very popular skiing destination and in the summer it’s used as a base for climbing and other outdoor activities. There’s a slight climb up to Kranjska Gora but it’s gradual and shouldn’t pose too many problems. If you have time, take a ride up to the Planica ski jumping site nearby. Settle into you hotel in this bustling little alpine town.

Day 7: Kranjska Gora – Lake Bled, 25 or 30 miles/40 or 48 kms

Vintgar Gorge - Slovenia*

Vintgar Gorge

Your last day of riding leads you from Kranjska Gora back downhill on route to Lake Bled. You’ll return to the Triglav National Park to take in some incredibly beautiful riverside scenery, first along the River Sava Dolinka to where it meets the Sava Bohinjka and becomes the River Sava proper. Then it’s into the lush green Krma Valley and the foot of Mount Triglav itself, the highest of the Julian Alps. The views are breathtaking, as is the Vintgar Gorge, which you may choose to visit and maybe enjoy a meal of fresh trout before returning to Bled for the last night of your cycling holiday.

Day 8: End of tour

After breakfast it’s time to check out and head for home or your next adventure.

  • Service comment - Flexitreks were great - good information and everything very clear. Wizz airlines (to Slovenia) made some itinerary changes which did not suit us and we were charged to change the flights to different days but this was NOT an issue with Flexitreks.

  • Product comment - Beautiful scenery and great mixture of hotels to stay in; great food in all the half boards. Local team really helpful - had to miss a couple of days cycling (due to gout!) but still had to move on each day - transport for us, bikes and luggage arranged.
  • Flexitreks response - Service rating : Thanks Stephen, I'm glad all went well despite the airline issues.

Product : Thanks for the lovely review Stephen. I'm sorry to hear you had to miss a couple of days riding and I'm glad our local team was able to get you to your next hotel.

  • Product rating -

  • Product comment - Well organised
    Excellent briefing beforehand
Good clear directions for the trip in almost all cases(one or two places where it was tricky).
On two nights we were in large hotels - I would recommend smaller, more personal, hotels if possible.
Hotel Triglav in Bled was superb.
  • Flexitreks response - Service rating : Thanks Jonathan, we really appreciate the feedback.

Product : Thanks for the review Jonathan. While it would be lovely to offer accommodation in small, personal hotels throughout the week, Lake Bled is such a popular draw that sometimes the larger properties are the only option.
