A bike and boat cycling holiday between Koblenz and Bad Wimpfen along the Rhine and Neckar rivers through one of Germany’s most scenic wine regions. Historic riverside towns, fantastic landscapes and a pleasant combination of activity and relaxation make this a memorable cycling holiday.

The MS Patria, your floating hotel for the week, is a comfortable river cruiser specially adapted for cycle cruise trips. You’ll disembark each day for relaxing rides alongside the river, through timeless landscapes and quaint riverside towns. The rides are easy but if you fancy taking a day off you can just stay on board and let the stunning scenery drift by as the MS Patria cruises to her next port of call.

Highlights of this trip include riding from Boppard to Rüdesheim through the breathtaking Rhine Valley, sampling the excellent local wines in Nierstein, exploring the atmospheric old town of Heidelberg and arriving triumphantly in the medieval town of Bad Wimpfen.

All cabins are en suite, and the MS Patria  also has a restaurant, bar and saloon, plus partially covered sun deck.

Heidelberg - Germany

The cycle rides cover anywhere between 16 and 28 miles each day on paved paths beside the river. There are next to no hills and this tour really can be enjoyed by anyone with basic level of fitness.

Day 1: Arrive Koblenz

MS Patria - bikes

MS Patria

On arrival in Koblenz make your way to the MS Patria and step on board. Embarkation is from 4pm. After getting acquainted with your floating base for the week you’re free to relax so why not head into town to explore the city where the Rhine and Mosel rivers meet. The Patria remains moored in Koblenz for the night

Day 2: Koblenz – Boppard – Rüdesheim, 29 miles/46 kms

Boppard - Rhine - Germany*

Leaving Koblenz, the boat cruises up-river into open countryside, stopping in the riverside town of Boppard where you disembark for your first bike ride. Following the left bank of the river, the easy-going route leads you past castles and small towns. You’ll pass the infamous Lorelei Rock, scene of many a boat accident, either due to the fast flowing waters here or perhaps the legendary water nymph – you decide. Eventually you arrive in the beautiful wine producing town of Rüdesheim (or Bingen) where the Patria is waiting for you. Take a stroll through the lovely old town, perhaps ducking into a tavern to sample the excellent local wine before retiring to your cabin for the night.

Day 3: Rüdesheim – Mainz, 20 to 22 miles/32 to 35 kms

Today’s ride takes you on the short but scenic stretch of the Rhine from Rüdesheim to Mainz. Gentle slopes, covered in grapevines lead down to the water’s edge and your cycle path as you pedal along past picturesque half-timbered houses. Mainz is a large, historic town with numerous museums and historical monuments. In the evening you are welcome to join your on-board guide for a guided walk of the town.

Day 4: Mainz – Nierstein, 11 to 16 miles/17 to 26 kms

Quite a short cycle ride today but a very scenic one. The route leads you out of Mainz and back into open countryside dominated by the patchwork of vineyards on the sloping hillsides. Your destination is the small town of Nierstein. It may be small but the town is the largest wine growing community on the river and produces some wonderfully crisp, white wines. A popular pastime is to explore the vineyards on a tractor trailer tour.

Day 5: Nierstein – Mannheim – Heidelberg, 16 miles/25 kms

Heidelberg - Germany

The day starts with a cruise upstream to the town of Mannheim where you disembark for today’s ride. You pedal first along your old friend the Rhine, before bidding it farewell and branching off along the Neckar River to the Celtic town of Ladenburg. A little further along the river you reach today’s destination – Heidelberg. The town enjoys a tranquil location on the banks of the Neckar in a steep, wooded valley.

Day 6: Heidelberg – Eberbach, 22 miles/34 kms

Eberbach - Neckar - Germany*

Your journey today takes you from Heidelberg roughly eastwards via Ziegelhausen and into the idyllic Odenwald region to Neckarsteinach – the town of the four castles on the banks of the Neckar. Then it’s not far to your overnight stop at Eberbach, another historic riverside town of winding streets and cosy inns.

Day 7: Eberbach – Bad Wimpfen, 28 miles/45 kms

Bad Wimpfen - Germany*

Bad Wimpfen

Today’s final ride takes you first to the ancient ruins at Burg Hornsberg before delivering you to Bad Wimpfen, a historic spa town that looks like it’s stepped straight out of the Middle Ages. This pretty old town is a fitting venue in which to end your cycling adventure on the Rhine and Neckar rivers.

Day 8: Bad Wimpfen

After breakfast it’s time to disembark, by 9am, and head for home or your next adventure.
