Overview

This cycling holiday leads you through some of Austria’s most impressive alpine scenery. Along the way you’ll see picture-perfect alpine villages, serene mountain lakes, glistening glaciers, tumbling waterfalls and cavernous gorges. While you are always surrounded by alpine vistas, the route sticks to the valley floor offering relaxed cycling along bike paths and low-traffic roads.

This could almost be called the highlights of Austria tour. You start and finish in the charming city of Salzburg, famous with many for being the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart while for others it is inextricably linked with one of the most popular musicals ever made, The Sound of Music.

Krimml Falls - Austria*

Krimml Falls

Leaving the city you cycle into a world of lush meadows, mountain streams and towering peaks. The town of Zell am See on the shores of the Zeller lake has to be one of the most picturesque towns in the Alps. The Kitzstenhorn glacier above the pretty village of Kaprun is an awe inspiring sight as are the thundering waterfalls near Krimml. Stunning views and fresh mountain air are constants throughout the trip and each evening will be spent in cosy, idyllic alpine villages.

The route is mostly along bike paths and quiet roads. Any climbs are gentle and on the whole the route is reasonably level.

Day 1: Arrive Salzburg

Salzburg - Austria II*

Salzburg

On arrival in Salzburg make your way to your hotel. After check-in you’re free to explore the city of Mozart. As well as being the great composer’s birthplace, Salzburg has plenty to offer. You shouldn’t miss the imposing Hohensalzburg Castle and Mirabell Palace, but we also highly recommend simply sitting in a traditional café and enjoying a coffee and indulgent pastry whilst absorbing the atmosphere of this lovely old town.

Day 2: Salzburg – Lofer, 31 miles/49 kms

Cyclists admiring alpine view*Your first day’s cycling leads you along the Saalach river to the spa town of Bad Reichenhall just over the border in Germany. The town has a proud salt mining heritage and the saline and salt museum is worth a visit. Continue along the Saalach through a lush valley to the the pretty village of Unken and finally to Lofer – your overnight stop. The river is quite boisterous here attracting many white water enthusiasts in kayaks and rafts. The village itself enjoys an idyllic alpine setting which you are sure to enjoy.

Day 3: Lofer – Zell am See/Kaprun/Piesendorf, 29 to 38 miles/46 to 58 kms

Zell am See - AustriaII*

Zell am See

After breakfast you head south, again following the Saalach River this time along a broad valley. The scenery is stunning and keeps getting better. The town of Zell am See enjoys a wonderful setting on the shores of serene Zeller Lake and in the distance, Austria’s tallest mountain the Grossglockner commands the skyline. After arriving in the charming village of Kaprun you may wish to venture a little further up the valley for a cable car ride up to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. At a height of 3000 meters the views really are special and this is complemented by the unusual sight of skiers enjoying their winter sport in the summer time! Kaprun also boasts a rather good spa which might be just the thing after a day in the saddle. Your overnight may be in Zell am See, Kaprun or Piesendorf.

Day 4: Zell am See/Kaprun/Piesendorf – Krimml – Roundtrip, 33 to 41 miles/53 to 65 kms

Krimml Falls - Austria*

Krimml Falls

After breakfast you take the train with your bike to Krimml, 50 kms to the west. From the station at Krimml it is a short 3 km ride up to the head of the valley to the Krimml Waterfalls, the highest falls in Europe. Follow the waterfall trail on foot to get incredibly close to the plunging falls. After your visit, set off on your bike back following a lovely bike trail through the lush meadows and pretty alpine villages. It’s mostly level and easy cycling all the way back.

Day 5: Zell am See/Kaprun/Piesendorf– St. Johann/Bischofshofen, 26 to 35 miles/41 to 55 kms

Liechtensteinklamm gorge - Austria*

Liechtensteinklamm gorge

Today’s ride leads you eastwards past the southern tip of the Zeller Lake via the villages of Bruck and Taxenbach to St. Johann im Pongau and Bischofshofen. Again it’s a nice level ride so you can relax and drink in the scenery as you pedal beside the fast flowing Salzach River. Just before arriving in St. Johann/Bischofshofen you may wish to make a small detour to the impressive Liechtensteinklamm, a deep and narrow gorge through which a wooden walkway has been constructed for safe viewing. You will spend the night in either St. Johann or nearby Bischofshofen or in Golling.

Day 6: St. Johann/Bischofshofen – Salzburg, 33 miles/52 kms

Hohenwerfen Castle and Werfen Village

Hohenwerfen Castle and Werfen Village

We suggest an early start as there is much to see en route today. Head north along the wide Salzach Valley and before long the ancient hilltop castle at Werfen comes into view. You may wish to stop and visit the nearby ice caves that stretch for 40kms below the mountains. Continue north along the wonderful Salzach Valley to Hallein where it’s again possible to venture underground if you wish, this time to visit some traditional salt mines. The old miners’ slides are a fun and exhilarating way to descend through the galleries! From Halein it’s a short easy ride to Salzburg where you will spend the last night of your tour.

Day 7: Departure

After breakfast its time to check-out and head for your home or next adventure.

  • Product comment - We were provided with seven speed hub gears instead of the advertised 21 gear bikes. I especially had difficulty with the hills on these bikes. By the second day we knew they weren’t going to work for us and contacted Ally to say we’d take a day off cycling the next day (and to and fro Krimml Falls) so the supplier could change our bikes. This was resolved without issue from either Flexitreks or the supplier.
Apart from that hiccup, we loved everything about this tour. The cycling tracks, scenery, accommodation were all wonderful. Would definitely recommend this tour.

  • Product comment - Great trip, very easy transfers when flying in/out Salzburg. Cycling with the mountains in constant view was amazing. The Krimml falls are well worth the visit, make sure to get the early train and spend a few hours there.
    Great food, great people.
Will be going back to Austria.
  • Flexitreks response - Service rating : You are very welcome Steve. From the photo it looks like you had great weather too which is always nice.

Product : Thank you so much Steve and great tip regarding Krimml Falls.

  • Product comment - This was a great trip, it was a challenge for 2 non serious cyclists though! On our second day, it poured down ALL day which was a real mental challenge and something we hadn't predicted! By the end of the day we were as wet as we could be and cold. However. things could only get better! And they did! The views were beautiful, the hotels were great, sometimes a little quirky, and the breakfasts always set you up well for a day in the saddle. Luggage transfers were one thing we didn't even have to think about which was great, and the bikes... Well, the bikes were superb! Plenty of gears, good quality, comfy saddles, plenty of panniers and brilliant handlebar bag and map holder - altho even the best map holders couldn't keep out our second day's hours and hours of rain!
We found that the cycling was pretty much all we did each day, apart from stopping for lunch and drinks and taking snaps, but this would perhaps depend on your fitness level. By the final 2 days I had given up on trying to cycle up hills as the thighs were screaming, but walking up the hills wasn't a problem.
Austria really do know how to do cycle paths. There are so many very good paths! We spent some time on roads but they were nearly always quiet (with just one exception). And most paths were tarmacked, making cycling easier. (But Austria do not do credit cards like we do so beware, you do need cash!)
All in all, we really enjoyed our first cycling holiday, it was a real challenge which is no bad thing, but next time I think we'll go for e-bikes!!!
  • Flexitreks response - Thanks for the very thorough review Julie and we're glad you enjoyed your first cycling holiday experience. None of us are that keen on cycling in the rain so well done for persevering and not putting the bikes on a train. E-bikes are available on most of out tours so that decision shouldn't narrow your choice too much for next year's trip.

  • Product comment - The only problem was the limitation of the map for leaving Salzburg. Street names are not marked and it made it hard to follow.
The hotels were excellent and the bag transfer was seamless.
  • Flexitreks response - Thanks for the feedback Peter. We're liaising with our local supplier to see how the Salzburg map and directions can be improved. Glad everything else went well though.

  • Product comment - The use of the Achat Plaza was a good choice because it was an easy walk from the train station and was convenient to the old city.

The map to lead tours out of Salzburg need to be improved. There should be a detailed map.

The hotels were all excellent. Luggage transfers were always efficient. The bikes were more than adequate.

The route was very scenic and an excellent tour.
  • Flexitreks response - Thanks for the positive review Michael. In light of your comments the Salzburg route notes are being reviewed but we're glad this issue didn't seem to mar the holiday too much.
