Overview

A cycling holiday along Sardinia’s wonderful south west coast. Enjoy crystal clear waters, white sand beaches, impressive rugged landscapes, ancient ruins, secluded villages and wildlife wetlands. A cycling holiday for beach and nature lovers with plenty of culture thrown in too.

Cycling the south west of the island is certainly a colourful experience. The white, almost salt-like sand contrasting with the deep blue water. Then further inland you have green rugged countryside and hills dotted with ancient villages, olive groves and vineyards as well as the wetlands of the Sinis Peninsula and their inhabitants the flamingos.

Along the way discover some of the country’s rich past as well as appreciating its natural beauty. Evenings can be spent enjoying some fine Italian food and wine as you recount the day’s cycling adventure.

The route follows scenic, undulating coastal roads and lanes. There are some climbs along the way, particularly on day 4, but nothing too taxing and the many beaches allow for regular, refreshing swim stops.

Day 1: Arrive Cabras

Pink Flamingoes

Cabras Lagoon

Upon arrival in Cabras make your way to your first hotel. After check-in you are free to relax at the hotel or explore. The small, quiet village is located on the shore of the Cabras Lagoon, an extensive wetland area that has been fished for centuries. Here you may see local fishermen using boats handwoven from locally sourced reeds. You’ll find a nice beach in the nearby town of Torre Grande and a short ride away you can enjoy the natural rugged beauty of the Sinis Peninsula.

Day 2: Cabras – Arborea, 43 miles/68 kms

Sinis Peninsula - Sardinia - Italy*

Sinis Peninsula

Start your cycling with an optional loop ride of the Sinis Peninsula, home to thousands of pink flamingos and other bird life, especially in spring. Also on the Sinis Peninsula you will find the spectacular setting of the ruins of Tharros where there is evidence of occupation back as far as the 8th century BC. En-route you will pass the white quartz beach of Arutas, so make sure you bring your swim stuff as this is an ideal spot for a dip! Then it’s onwards to the medieval town of Oristano on route to your overnight stop in Arborea.

Day 3: Arborea – Costa Verde – Arbus, 29 to 34 miles/46 to 54 kms

Piscinas beach - Costa Verde - Sardinia - Italy*

Piscinas beach – Costa Verde

Today you will cycle through the beautiful Costa Verde to the Piscinas beach. Here you will really notice the striking beauty of this area – there is a long and wide sand beach overlooking the sea and magnificent sand dunes which are over 50 metres high in parts and quite impressive. This evening spend the night in a lovely agriturismo property set in the countryside on a raised plateau.

Day 4: Arbus – Mines of Sulcis – Nebida, 26 miles/41 kms

Portixeddu

Portixeddu

A change of scenery today as you cycle past the ancient mines of Sulcis, which were mined as far back as Neolithic ages. While they are abandoned today they do offer an insight into a once flourishing business. Then onwards passing the beaches of Portixeddu Beach and the mass of Pan di Zucchero cliffs, which rear out of the sea in the distance. Arrive in the beautiful setting of Nebida along the coast, for the evening.

Day 5: Nebida – Carloforte Island – Calasetta, 27 miles/43 kms

Carloforte - Sardinia - Italy

Carloforte

Enjoy a lovely downhill descent through Fontanamare and on to Portoscuros to board the short ferry ride to Carloforte where the local way of life has not changed in years and today fishing is still their source of income. Continue onto the unspoilt and nature-rich island of Sant’Antioco before ending the day in Calasetta with its lovely harbour and a varied choice of restaurants and bars.

Day 6: Calasetta – Sant’Antioco Island – S.A. Arresi, 25 miles/40 kms

Porto Pino beach - Sardinia - Italy*

Porto Pino beach

Ride across the island of Sant’Antioco to its namesake capital and then cross the causeway back to the mainland to a salt pan that is home to flamingos and other aquatic birds. Enjoy a peaceful ride through the rolling plains of Sulcis, dotted with olive groves and vineyards,  to Tratalias where you can see the Romanesque Cathedral of Santa Maria di Monserrato. You will stop for the night in the small village of Sant-Anna Arresi just inland from the stunning beaches of Porto Pino.

Day 7: S.A. Arresi – Costa del Sud – Pula, 36 miles/57 kms

Bay near Pula - Sardinia - Italy

Gorgeous Bay near Pula

Your last cycle day leads you along the beautiful Costa del Sud, a colourful, scenic, and rugged coastline dotted with white sandy beaches, imposing cliffs and ancient, Phoenician settlements. You will spend the last night of your tour in the pretty bustling town of Pula, just a short taxi ride from Cagliari Airport.

Day 8: End of trip

After breakfast it’s time to check out and head for home or your next adventure.

Current rating for this cycling holiday based on 1 review 4.5
  • Date - 18/06/2016
  • Name - Linda(Bo)
  • Service rating -
    4.0
  • Service comment - Trip description , day by day, were not very accurate or detailed enough. A good map showing our route each day would have been helpful. Also clearer guide lines for training, getting in shape for trip should be emphasized as weather and elevations can make this trip very challenging.
References for reading materials, movies about the area, history, customs, maybe some common Italian phrases and words, biking etiquette and terms.
This would all been good to have BEFORE the trip.
  • Product rating -
    5.0
  • Product comment - Guide, Michele, owner Sandro were/ are fantastic. Route, hotels, bikes and food all excellent. I'd do the trip again in a heartbeat but now am wanting to see and bike through northern Sardegna.
  • Flexitreks response - Hi Linda, We're glad you enjoyed your cycling holiday in Sardinia. The map and route description on our website are created in conjunction with our local supplier and are there to sell the essence and highlights of the trip. Like most cycle tour operators we avoid providing detailed maps and route notes on our website as this tends to encourage the do-it-yourself market.
