Overview

For a taste of the real Spain, this cycling holiday in Castile and Leon is just the ticket. It leads you from the World Heritage city of Segovia through a rural landscape dotted with ancient towns and villages. Ornate castles and beautifully preserved, medieval towns are set amidst truly breathtaking scenery.

This is a charming part of rural Spain where you’ll want to stop at almost every town or village you come across. Highlights include the tiny village of Collado Hermoso, where you’ll be based for two nights, and Pedraza, one of the region’s best preserved medieval towns. Then there’s hilltop Sepulveda and the adventure of cycling through the dramatic Duraton Canyon Nature Reserve, where vultures soar high above the river gorge.

Day 1: Arrive Segovia

Roman aqueduct - Segovia - Spain*

Roman aqueduct – Segovia

On arrival in Segovia make your way to your hotel. After check-in you’re free to explore this historic city in the heart of Spain. Its old centre has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the huge cathedral and Roman aqueduct are particularly impressive.

Day 2: Segovia – Collado Hermoso, 26 miles/42 kms

Sotosalbos

Collado Hermoso

Start your Spanish cycle tour by leaving Segovia to ride along quiet country roads through a charming rural landscape. As you head towards Collado Hermoso you’ll have the chance to explore the beautiful gardens of San Ildefonso Royal Palace and maybe stop for some tasty local food at Torrecaballeros.

Day 3: Collado Hermoso – Turegano – Collado Hermoso, 22 miles/36 kms

Turegano

Turegano

Today is a circular route, taking you away from the mountains near Collado Hermoso to the old Moorish town of Turegano. Don’t miss the ornate castle and beautiful town square. There will be time to look around before getting back on your bikes and returning to the little community of Sotosalbos for a second night.

Day 4: Collado Hermoso – Pedraza, 20 miles/32 kms

Pedraza

Pedraza

You’ll ride through woodland and traditional Spanish villages today on a relatively short stretch of cycling, which will give you more time to get to know the fantastically preserved medieval town of Pedraza. Take a stroll round its historic streets to get you in the mood for dinner at one of its great restaurants.

Day 5: Pedraza – Pedraza, 18 miles/29 kms

Segovia

Rustic villages

Pedraza is such a wonderful place you’ll be glad of a second night to continue enjoying its charms. Today’s circular route leads you on a gentle tour of the surrounding countryside. Every now and then you come across small, rustic villages, most of which seem to feature beautiful old Romanesque churches at their centres. Why not stop and sample authentic local cuisine in one of these charming little places?

Day 6: Pedraza – Sepulveda, 19 miles/31 kms

Sepulveda - Segovia - Spain*

Sepulveda

Back in the saddle you’ll leave Pedraza behind to cycle from the foothills to the Castilian plains, a land of seemingly endless stretches of swaying sunflowers and wheat fields. You’ll be heading for the hill top town of Sepulveda, where you’ll be treated to sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. Before you arrive there’s the opportunity to stop at a natural spring for a picnic and maybe take a dip in the crystal waters.

Day 7: Sepulveda – Duraton Natural Park, 22 miles/37 kms

Duraton River - Segovia - Spain *We’ve saved some of the best cycling to last as you ride into the sublime scenery of the Duraton Natural Park. It’s a fantastic way to end the trip and you may even be lucky enough to see vultures and hawks soar above you as you follow the River Duraton along the canyon floor, shaded by tall poplar trees.

Day 8: Departure

After breakfast it’s time to check out and head for home or your next adventure.

  • Product comment - The roads were quiet, to the point of almost being empty. The scenery beautiful. The town's full of architectural and historic interest. The days weren't too long but could be supplemented with the wealth of historic buildings and wildlife to view. Accommodation was quite outstanding and very good value. It would be insane not to take the half-board option as the catering was if an extremely high standard, again, at an exceptionally good price. Bear in mind that the ride is at modest and altitude and although warm/hot in summer, it can be chilly in the spring and autumn. We were glad of long trousers which we wore in the sun, in late October. Great holiday, highly recommended.
  • Flexitreks response - Service rating : Great - many thanks David.

  • Product comment - We travelled on the last week in September, a perfect time of year for this region of Spain. Beautiful, leisurely cycling on quiet rural roads. Well thought out route, with interesting places to visit, lots of hilltop villages and medieval castles. The accommodation along the way was excellent. We opted for half board and the food and wine was of the region and very tasty! Would definitely recommend this cycle holiday.
  • Flexitreks response - Great review and great photos - thank you so much Teresa.

  • Product comment - The trip was great. The bikes and service were very good.

Above all the route directions (with a couple of exceptions) were the best and clearest of any self guided tour I have been on.
  • Flexitreks response - Many thanks Rosalind. We're glad you enjoyed it and our local supplier will be chuffed to hear he won a 'best-ever' award for his route directions!

  • Product comment - The towns and B&Bs were fine. Beautiful weather the first week of June, and wildflowers were unbelievable! The route was quite scenic, but there were some longer hills, so we might consider the e-bikes if we did it again. Had a great time.
  • Flexitreks response - Thanks for the review Sharon and glad to hear you managed the hills!
