Day 1. Arrive Amsterdam, 7 miles/10 kms

Adriaan windmill - Haarlem - Holland

Adriaan windmill – Haarlem

Upon arrival in Amsterdam, make your way to the barge located near the Central Railway Station in the heart of the city. Embarkation is between 12.30 and 1pm and the barge sets sail at 1.30pm for a short cruise to the village of Spaarndam, best known because of the Hans Brinker novel, where a small boy becomes a hero by putting his finger in a hole in the dike to prevent the town from flooding! Enjoy a short, enjoyable cycle-ride to Haarlem before reboarding the boat for dinner. In the evening our guide leads us on a stroll through the cobbled streets of the old town. Afterwards why not stop in at one of the cosy bars for a nightcap.

Day 2. Haarlem – Leiden, 10 miles/15 kms

Tulips

The Tulip fields

Today is a real highlight as you get to visit the Keukenhof – the world’s largest flower garden. Here we wonder amongst 7 million bulbs including daffodils, hyacinths and tulips, set over nearly 80 acres of land. The kaleidoscope of colours and fragrances are unforgettable and at times our senses are almost overwhelmed. Afterwards we cycle through a myriad of colourful bulb fields. The colours are stunning and this is definitely not a day to forget the camera. Our final destination is the pretty town of Leiden – often described as a calmer version of Amsterdam – where we re-board the boat for dinner.

Day 3. Leiden – Kudelstaart, 19 miles/30 kms

Polder scene

Iconic polder landscape

After breakfast our guide leads us on a walking tour of Leiden old town – the birthplace of Rembrandt. This really is a pretty town, steeped in history and home to some of the Netherlands’ most important museums. Afterwards we cycle onwards through the traditional Dutch polder landscape to Kudelstaart, stopping off at a cheese farm and a working windmill along the way. We spend the night moored in Kudelstaart.

Day 4. Kudelstaart – Aalsmeer – Amsterdam, 10 miles/15 kms

Cycling in Holland

Cycling in Holland

An early start to your trip today to visit Aalsmeer, the biggest flower market in the world! Witness the age-old procedure of selling the flowers globally at a tempo that will dazzle and impress. Afterwards, cycle back to the boat to cruise back to Amsterdam where your trip comes to an end. You disembark around midday.

  • Product comment - Interesting guides, good weather, lovely countryside, better than expected accomodation. The food was plentiful but the meals were a little odd. Some typical dutch cuisine would have been nice.
  • Flexitreks response - Glad you enjoyed it Alison. On the food front - the barge owners have experimented over the years and most tend to opt for international favourites rather than typical Dutch cuisine due to the wide cosmopolitan mix of people on board.

  • Product comment - The food photo on Flexitreks was nothing like the food on the boat. It was one meal for dinner, not a buffet as expected. Pretty basic meals ie spaghetti Bol one night, stew and chips another. Cabin rooms are v compact as described, we found it easier to just have one in room expect at bedtime and you had to sit sideways on loo or have door open. However it was cheaper than a lot of other similar breaks. Just think ‘camping’
Cycle part was great due to scenery and Rosanne the guide was excellent and knowledgeable.
  • Flexitreks response - Thanks for the useful feedback and we're glad you enjoyed your holiday overall. These canal barges are all quite narrow and there's no escaping the fact the cabins are a little compact. The barge owner assures us he does do buffets sometimes but as this isn't every week we have elected to remove the buffet image from the gallery of this tour.

  • Product comment - Good food, adequate cabin accomadation, pleasant guide. The tour and stopping places were enjoyable and broke up the longer distance ride on the third day. The only negative comment concerns the rather abrasive personality of the captain of the Jelmar.
  • Flexitreks response - Thanks for the feedback. We're glad you enjoyed your bike and barge holiday in Holland and are sorry that you found the barge captain to be a little gruff.

  • Service comment - Hard to know. I booked 2 trips through Flexitreks, but the boat tours were run by other operators. So other than liking their website, I didn't have much contact with them.

  • Product comment - Good trip. However, the engine on the barge had problems one morning. As a result, we had to cycle through a rather busy area of town to get to our destination. I didn't mind the extra miles, but the route was busy with traffic and intersections. My bicycle had a bad peddle that should have been replaced. A little oil was not the answer. Closer attention to that kind of detail would make happier cyclists.
  • Flexitreks response - Duly noted Greg - rest assured the pedal issue has been fed back to the local operator.

  • Product comment - Comfortable clean boat, grumpy captain in many respects, unwilling to allow any hot drinks after 8pm, and negative unwelcoming attitude. Excellent bikes, guide helpful when asked, but minimal communication on tour and on city walks etc, guide knew route which was stunning and well planned, but sometimes slower members really struggled and were upset at difficulty keeping up, maybe helpful for guide to have a walkie talkie to communicate with sweeper as required, lots of opportunities to share information not taken. Pre trip info stated bottles of water would be give each day and they were not. Food adequate, hot, but basic, would be good to have some variety at breakfast, and for packed lunch preparation, only variety was on day offers small amount of Brie in addition to Gouda.
  • Flexitreks response - We really appreciate your constructive feedback and for providing more detail over the phone with Ally. Your comments have been fed back to the relevant parties and assurances received that things will improve.

  • Product comment - The bike and boat tour was fantastic.
The rides were guided and were easy. They were mainly on proper cycle paths, but there were some stretches on roads and quite a few main roads to cross or ride along side - some people did struggle with the riding as they hadn't been on a bike for years !.
The visit to Keukenhof was amazing (but very busy) and the visits to the windmill, cheese farm and flower auction were amazing.
It helped that the weather was lovely too.
A good group of folks from USA, Australia and UK and we all mixed together really well.
The barge (Jelmar) was comfortable and the food was good.
We enjoyed it so much we are looking forward to booking another bike and boat holiday next year
  • Flexitreks response - We really appreciate the detailed review Philip and look forward to helping you with next year's bike and boat adventure.

  • Product comment - Lovely barge, amazing food and plenty of it. Bikes were fab, tours were great the only thing is you can't predict the weather and how many tulips are in bloom.
  • Flexitreks response - Thanks for the positive review Nicola and great to hear you enjoyed everything even if the weather didn't play the game completely!
