Overview

A bike and boat cycling holiday through the vivid tulip fields of Holland aboard the very well appointed Magnifique or one of her sister-ships, the equally impressive Magnifique II or III. Easy cycling on dedicated cycle paths past fields ablaze with vivid blooms. Visit the world famous Keukenhof flower gardens and for some of the departures also the flower auctions at Aalsmeer. A unique springtime experience.

The Magnifique has long been recognised as one of the most luxurious barges afloat and in 2016 she was joined by her equally fabulous sister ship, the Magnifique II, offering the same levels of style and space and in spring 2018 the Magnifique III was added to the fleet, upholding the high standards offered by her sister ships.

Each day you will disembark for easy and enjoyable rides through the surrounding countryside. The kaleidoscopic bulb fields are of course the main attraction but on this tour you will also visit the iconic windmills of the Zaanse Schans, the atmospheric market square of Haarlem, the stunning Keukenhof Flower Gardens and for some of the departure dates also the frenetic Flower Market in Aalsmeer. Your last night aboard the Magnifique/II/III is spent in the centre of Amsterdam giving you plenty of time to explore this fascinating and unique city.

Magnifique II

Magnifique II

Two bike guides lead the daily rides and usually split the group into a faster and a slower group. This allows you to relax and cycle at an enjoyable pace without having to worry about navigation. The guide is also a font of knowledge on local customs, traditions and history and will be happy to impart his/her knowledge during the daily rides. You’ll cycle along dedicated cycle paths and quiet lanes. The longest ride is 40km (24 miles) and there are no hills so anyone with a basic level of fitness can enjoy this tour.

The emphasis is firmly on enjoying the scenery and springtime colours, so if you don’t fancy riding one day, simply stay on board and enjoy a relaxing cruise to the next port of call.

Day 1: Amsterdam – Zaandam

Amsterdam

Amsterdam

On arrival in Amsterdam make your way to your boat – embarkation and check-in is between 1pm and 2pm. After check-in the Magnifique/II/III slips her moorings and begins a leisurely cruise to nearby Zaandam, 22 miles/35 kms. Upon arrival you can enjoy taking your bike for a brief test ride and in the evening take a stroll through the picturesque old town before turning in for the night.

Day 2: Zaandam – Zaanse Schans – Haarlem, 14 to 21 miles/24 to 34 kms

Zaanse Schans - Holland

Zaanse Schans

After breakfast we enjoy a short cycle ride of approximately 5km to the open air museum of Zaanse Schans. Explore working windmills, traditional wooden dutch houses a clog workshop and a cheese factory. After returning to the boat you can choose whether to stay on board and enjoy a leisurely cruise to the town of Haarlem or to do the journey by bike. Once in Haarlem be sure to visit the town’s lovely main square.

Day 3: Haarlem – Keukenhof – Oude Wetering, 24 to 35 miles/39 to 57 kms

Today is a real highlight as we cycle through a myriad of colourful bulb fields. The colours are stunning and this is definitely not a day to forget the camera. The finale is a visit to the Keukenhof – the world’s largest flower garden. Here we wonder among 7 million bulbs including daffodils, hyacinths and tulips, set over nearly 80 acres of land. The kaleidoscope of colours and fragrances are unforgettable and at times our senses are almost overwhelmed. At lunchtime we cycle to the nearby village of Oude Wetering where the barge is waiting for us.

Day 4: Oude Wetering – Amsterdam, 16 to 18 miles/25 to 28 kms

Amsterdam

Amsterdam

If this day falls on a week day then you will have an early start! You wil be picked up at 06.30 and driven by bus the short distance to the Aalsmeer flower auction (entry fee of €7 – not included)*. Watch millions of blooms being auctioned to buyers from around the world in the blink of an eye. Afterwards, by 9am, you return to the boat for a late breakfast before you make you way to Amsterdam by bike or enjoy some leisure time while the boat cruises to Amsterdam. During the afternoon you either have the opportunity to make a last beautiful cycling tour throught the wetlands of Waterland or you might choose to take the time discover all that Amsterdam has to offer. Visit the inner city flower market, go to a museum or take the optional end-of-day canal tour.

  • Service comment - The information was pretty good, however a couple of negative points. Firstly we did not need to take cycling helmets or water bottles as we were told - they were provided. This makes a huge difference when only taking very limited cabin baggage on the plane as the helmet is particularly bulky. We were requested to take ‘soft’ luggage to fit under beds. Again that was not necessary as there was plenty of space so I ended up having to carry a heavy bag on my shoulder. There were more options for public transport to the boat which were not stated on the paperwork. This resulted in us having to walk some distance to find the ‘north’ side of the railway station when we could have taken tram number 26 from the south side. It was not clear that you cannot pay the driver in cash, which is normal in most places in the UK. Small things but they made a difference to our trip. Other than that the information was very good.

  • Product comment - Fabulous ship, wonderful crew. Food was fantastic, well presented and the bar bill at the end of the week reasonable. Couldn’t fault the quality which was superb in every way. Shame we weren’t offered the use of the jacuzzi on the top deck! Didn’t know it was there until the last day.
