Overview

A circular cycling holiday from and to Assisi, exploring the wonderful region of Umbria. Spend each day cycling through the charming Umbrian countryside, passing vineyards, olive groves and visiting medieval, hilltop towns. Each night will be spent in delightful, timeless towns or villages where quaint streets, delicious food and superb wine are always on offer.

Umbria is known as the green valley due to the rich fertile landscape but in summer it is more than that.  At this time it is adorned with masses of colour from the olive groves, cypress-topped hills, and sunflower fields to the medieval towns decked with a huge array of colourful flowers.

Umbrian countryside

Visit the towns of Assisi, Spoleto and Bevagna rich in history, culture, architecture, art and tradition. Not forgetting the spiritual connections in Assisi, which was home to St Francis and St Benedict and has the impressive basilica of St Francis where the saint’s body has been laid to rest. The route leads you along the valley floor, but to visit the lovely little hilltop towns it is also necessary to take on a few climbs. The steeper ones are not too long and the longer ones are not too steep, but a reasonable level of fitness is required to enjoy this tour fully.

Day 1: Arrive Assisi

Assisi - Umbria - ItalyIV*

Assisi

Upon arrival make your way to your first hotel in or nearby Assisi. After check-in you are free to relax and explore the town. Take a stroll to get your bearings and although the town can be busy at times you’ll notice there is still a calm and tranquil atmosphere about it. We suggest a visit to the Basilica of St Francis where St Francis is laid to rest. It is quite impressive with frescos by well known artists such as Giotto. Maybe visit one or two of the less well-known churches, which are equally lovely, such as the Church of St Clare before settling down in one of the many street cafes or restaurants for a spot of people watching.

Day 2: Assisi – Spoleto, 33 miles/53 kms

Spoleto - Umbria - Italy*

Spoleto

After breakfast your cycling adventure begins. We suggest you start early today so that you can appreciate the varied countryside and have time to explore some of the delightful villages along the route. You’ll definitely want to take a break in the pretty walled town of Spello. Stroll around the quaint narrow alleys, enjoying the floral displays which seem to leap from the sandstone buildings. Eventually you arrive in Spoleto, a gorgeous hilltop town surrounded by evergreen trees and your home for the evening.

Day 3: Spoleto – Bevagna, 22 to 25 miles/35 to 40 kms

Bevagna - Umbria - Italy*

Bevagna

Before leaving Spoleto we suggest you visit the cathedral with its beautiful frescoes and then head out into the Umbrian countryside. You have a choice of routes today with the easiest being a direct, flat route straight to Bevagna. At the foot of Montefalco you can decide whether to cycle straight on to Bevagna or detour up to the medieval hilltop village – known as the ‘Balcony of Umbria’. Its quite a climb but you’ll be rewarded with amazing views and the village itself is gorgeous! If further incentive is required how about the rather good wines produced here. Then it’s on to Bevagna, a bustling medieval valley town that will be your home for the evening.

Day 4: Bevagna – Assisi, 23 to 32 miles/37 to 52 kms

Umbrian Valley - Italy*

Umbrian Valley

Cycling today is mainly through the Umbrian valley. We suggest you take time to stop in the town of Torgiano, famous for its excellent red and white wines. Time permitting you may wish to visit the ‘osteria’ of the Lungarotti family, where you can taste some truly excellent wines. In the distance you will see the hilltop town of Assisi. Consider a stop at the Franciscan basilica in S.Maria degli Angeli with its impressive dome and humble little chapel Porziuncola, where St. Francis once came to pray. You then complete the circle, returning to Assisi for the final night of your holiday.

Day 5: End of Trip

After breakfast it’s time to check-out and head for home or your next adventure.

Was tricky matching flights with the tripbut that's due to the North having less choice in flights pre-Easter

  • Product comment - We chose comfort accommodation and it was good. The local cycle staff were very helpful. Bikes were perfect for the route which was roughly paved or gravel for a good proportion. Tour directions were detailed, we took some wrong turns but managed fine. In retrospect we should have downloaded the gps files available. The towns visited were stunning and the food we experienced was outstanding. I would say that the easy moderate description is accurate if you have a little bit of cycling experience or are young and fit (our group was age 40-60's.
  • Flexitreks response - Service rating : We're glad we could help and pleased you managed to find some flights to match the trip.
Product : Thanks you for the lovely review. Yes, having a smartphone that shows where you are on the route can be very helpful. We are able to offer this option on most of our tours these days.

  • Product comment - We had a great 4-day cycling trip in Umbria with Flexitreks. The bikes were in excellent condition, the hotels were very nice, and all of the services we received was great. The routes that they provided were top notch, small backcountry rodes that we would never have found on our own. Went through beautiful farm country, rolling Umbrian hills, and through a number of quaint cities and towns. Would definitely book again, a great experience!
  • Flexitreks response - Service rating : Thanks Sophy, we understand the pre-tour service is as important as the holiday itself.

Product : Thank you so much for the lovely review Sophy and we look forward to discussing next year's trip soon.
