This popular cycling holiday leads you around the northern shoreline of the Adriatic Sea from Venice, through the Friuli plains into Slovenia and finally to Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula. A pleasant mix of history, culture, coastal towns and wonderful sea views await on this enjoyable cycle tour.

Highlights of this cosmopolitan cycling holiday are many and varied. To start with there are the sights and sounds of captivating Venice. Then there’s the beaches and sea views between Lido di Jesolo and Caorle, the beautiful historic towns of Portogruaro, Aquileia and Palmanova and the ancient hilltop castles of Duino and Miramare.

Piran - Slovenia

In Slovenia you will love wandering the narrow streets of picturesque Piran and Portoroz and finally a wonderful ride through the beautiful countryside of Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula brings you to bustling Porec with its 6th century Euphrasian Basilica and charming old town.

This is definitely a tour of two halves. The first three days are along relatively flat paths and lanes while the last three stages are noticeably more undulating. Its not too bad however and over the whole tour you will only ascend a total of 1390 meters in total. There is also the option to shorten days 4 and 5 with a train ride.

Day 1: Arrive into Venice/Mestre

On arrival into Mestre/Venice, make your way to your hotel, which is located in Mestre on the mainland opposite Venice itself. After checking-in, it will take around 20 minutes to get into Venice itself by bus or train. There is much to see and do in Venice and besides visiting the well known landmarks, we highly recommend losing yourself in the quieter backstreets to get a real flavour of this most unique of cities.

Day 2: Mestre – Jesolo/Caorle, 25 to 41 miles/40 to 65 kms

Lido di Jesolo beach - Veneto - Italy*

Lido di Jesolo

After a short cycle ride you catch a ferry and then a Vaporetto past St Mark’s Square to Punta Sabbioni on the edge of the Venetian Lagoon. You then have a wonderful ride along the Adriatic Coast, passing through Lido do Jesolo to the town of Caorle where you will spend the night. There are plenty of inviting beaches along the way so remember to pack your swim things.

Day 3: Jesolo/Caorle – Portogruaro, 25 to 38 miles/40 to 60 kms

Portogruaro - Veneto - Italy*

Your destination today is the stylish town of Portogruaro. Your ride takes you away from the coast past a network of freshwater lakes towards the Julian Alps. Once you have settled into your hotel in Portogruaro take stroll around this Venetian town with its many glorious buildings and palaces.

Day 4: Portogruaro – Palmanova/Aquileia, 38 to 44 miles/60 to 70 kms

Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta - Aquileia

Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta – Aquileia

Today you can either ride the the full 60 kms or shorten the route to 40 kms by catching a local train. (Train ticket is to be purchased locally). Today sees you cycling between the Veneto and Friuli regions riding alongside rivers and canals past ancient roman towns to either the town of Palmanova, known as the ‘starry city’ as its layout is like a 9 pointed star or Aquilea with its roman excavations.

Day 5: Palmanova/Aquileia – Trieste, 32 to 44 miles/50 to 70 kms

Duino Castle - Gulf of Trieste - Italy*

Duino Castle

Today you head back towards the sea and the gulf of Trieste.  En-route consider visiting Duino which has two castles, Miramare with its castle set in a huge park, and the ancient port of Asburgic Empire which has many attractions. Again today you can shorten your ride if you wish by taking a train from Monfalcone to Trieste for the last stage. (Train ticket is to be purchased locally).

Day 6: Trieste – Piran – Portorož, 28 miles/45 kms

Piran - Slovenia

Cross the border today into Slovenia and enjoy riding along cycle paths through beautiful coastal towns such as Koper and Piran. In particular be sure to allow time for a stroll around the narrow streets of Piran, stopping also to admire the lovely square. You will spend the night in nearby Portorož renowned for its spa treatments and well-kept beaches.

Day 7: Portorož – Porec, 35 miles/55 kms

Porec - Croata*

We suggest an early start today so that you can have time to explore Porec, your final destination. Cross yet another border today as you leave Slovenia and cycle into Croatia. Ride through the glorious countryside of the Istrian Peninsula to the picture-postcard setting of Porec. Take time to explore the gorgeous old town with its narrow alleys, churches and of course the Basilica Euphrasis with its wonderful mosaics.

Day 8: End of trip

After breakfast it’s time to check-out and head for home or your next adventure. A fast ferry service connects Porec to Venice  – ask for details at the time of booking.

  • Product rating -
  • Product comment - We enjoyed it but thought some of the hotels were a bit more "average" than our last booking in Puglia. They were large and impersonal, particularly that in Porec itself. WE thought the second hotel in Creole, the people were very nice and helpful.
  • Flexitreks response - Thanks for the feedback Nick. Sometimes, paricularly in larger cities, the choice of suitable hotels is limited as we need to find properties where bikes can be stored securely. That said we've got the message about Porec and see what alternatives we can find.

  • Product comment - Too many roads. Scenery was very average first 4 days in cycle way too much road for me. Villages at night were good. Scenery last 2 days was better but I have done a few of these cycle trips and wouldn't recommend this trip
  • Flexitreks response - We appreciate the feedback Carole and I'm sorry you weren't that taken with the scenery on this particular route.

  • Service comment - Everything worked very well and efficiently. Bikes were great, local support was very helpful, maps and instructions were comprehensive and suitcases always arrived at destination hotel. Some hotels better than others but all were acceptable considering the price
  • Product rating -
  • Product comment - This is a great route. Mostly following the coast and great to visit three countries in on cycle trip. Some hills on the last two days but nothing to daunting if you have a reasonable level of fitness.Trieste was probably the highlight for me
  • Flexitreks response - Thanks Mark. We're glad you enjoyed your cycling holiday in Italy, Slovenia and Croatia!

  • Service comment - Ally was extremely helpful with securing ferry tickets for us so that we could get back to Venise from Porec plus, she helped us figure out transportation to and from the Dolemites, where we spent the first 9 days. She addressed and replied to all our questions quickly and thoroughly.

  • Product comment - We found all the accommodations very adequate, especially the last three days of the trip we we stayed at some very nice hotels. All the breakfasts were excellent. My wife and I felt the tour was an excellent value and would travel with Flexitreks again.
