Danube Cruiser Renovated for 2014

Posted on May 8, 2014 by

Recently I was lucky enough to be invited for a short cycle cruise aboard the newly renovated Theodor Körner, a river cruiser operating The Danube River Cycle Cruise between Passau and Vienna.

Theodor Koerner

Theodor Koerner twin cabin

First launched in 1966, this traditional Danube river-cruiser is no spring chicken but her whimsical charm has won her many fans over the years and a complete makeover for 2014 can only increase her appeal further.

The new-look cosy cabins are 8m² and equipped with either twin or bunk beds. There are also 5 large junior suites with double beds and some twin cabins also feature a third (bunk) bed. Each cabin has en suite (shower and toilet), TV, radio and air conditioning. There is also a safe, hairdryer and plenty of electrical points for recharging appliances.

The cabins are arranged over three decks (low mid and upper). The windows of the upper deck cabins can be opened to fresh air as can the windows of the midship cabins on the mid deck.

To the rear of the boat there is a shaded, outdoor seating area, perfect for admiring the scenery as it drifts by, and the top-deck is a large, open sun-deck offering plenty of comfortable seating including sun-loungers. The bikes are stored on the forward decks out of everyone’s way.

The food on board is of a very high standard. Breakfast is buffet style with something for everyone from muesli and fruit to eggs & bacon and everything in between. The three course evening meal is a true culinary delight featuring fresh produce prepared and served in exciting and innovative combinations.

Directly above the dining salon is the comfortable and spacious bar/lounge, complete with dance floor. This is a very convivial space for socialising and enjoying a drink. Finally, above the bar, there is another quieter lounge where one can relax with a book or maybe enjoy a game of cards with friends.

Lastly I should also mention the bikes as they are of a particularly high standard and perfect for pedalling along the lanes and pathways beside the Danube. The frames are manufactured by KTM, a well known motorbike manufacturer and are equipped with comfortable saddle, odometer, stand and 21 gears.

So if you are considering a Danube cycle cruise this summer then I can highly recommend the Theodor Körner which will make a very comfortable base for your holiday.

Easy:
Our easy cycling holidays offer short daily rides on mostly level terrain. A typical day’s ride will take 2 – 3 hours at a leisurely pace and the remainder of the day will be free for you to explore further or simply relax. These rides are particularly recommended for newcomers to cycling holidays and for families.

Leisurely:
Our leisurely cycle holidays will suit those who are reasonably fit through regular exercise of one kind or another – not necessarily cycling. On the whole, the terrain will be level but there may also be a few small hills to contend with along the way too. Daily rides will typically take around 3 – 4 hours to complete.

Moderate:
Our moderate cycle holidays are for regular cyclists, who are used to longer rides with regular climbs. A good level of fitness is needed and you can expect to be in the saddle for between 4 and 5 hours each day.

Challenging:
These holidays are for seasoned cyclists who cycle long distances regularly and who enjoy the thrill of long days in the saddle. There will undoubtedly be some challenging climbs along the way and you can expect to cover between 55 and 75 miles each day.
