King of Fjords Cycling Holiday

A leisure cycling holiday along the shores of the Sognefjord, Norway's largest and deepest fjord. Cycle through a majestic unspoilt landscape of high mountain peaks, cascading waterfalls and tiny hamlets of wooden clapperboard houses. Breathe in the fresh Nordic air and truly unwind on this relaxing holiday in the back of beyond.

Spend a night in Bergen before catching a ferry up the coast to the Sognefjord, Norway's 'King of Fjords'. You'll then spend 5 days cycling through an epic, mythical landscape that is raw, untamed and utterly captivating

Solvorn

Your daily rides serve up a smorgasbord of visual treats from high mountain peaks with verdant pine-clad flanks to thundering waterfalls and tiny fairytale-like hamlets all reflected in the mirror-like waters of the crystal-clear fjord.

You'll spend two nights at each stopover hotel, allowing you to relax and fully unpack at each of the charming villages you will stay at along the route.

At the end of the tour you will be dropped off at the quay in Sogndal from where you can catch the ferry back to Bergen

The daily cycle routes range from 24 to 59 kms and follow mostly quiet lanes and roads close to the shoreline. There are some undulations along the way, with one notable climb of 250m over 5 kilometres to Hafslo at the end of day six but for the most part this route is rated easy and well within the abilities of all leisure cyclists. Regular hybrid bikes are included in the package price and e-bikes are available for a supplement.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Bergen

Arrive at Bergen Airport and take the Airport Express bus into the city, journey time is 30 minutes. Check in to your hotel and relax. Depending on the time you arrive you can either get out and explore the city or just relax as tomorrow you have most of the day in the city before your ferry departs for the Sognefjord at 16:30. Being a University town Bergen has a buzzing bar scene and great nightlife.

Day 2 : Bergen to Vik by ferry

If you didn't have a chance yesterday today you can explore the beautiful port city of Bergen. First stop has to be the colourful clapperboard houses of the Bryggen wharf - be sure to venture into the alleyways behind the main facades where you will find a charming haven for artists and craftspeople as well as a host of bijou boutiques. We also recommend visiting the lively fish market where you will find several restaurants serving a great selection of fresh seafood dishes.

You may wish to consider pre-booking a bike for your day in Bergen and following the recommended route around the city that is described in your roadbook - there's also a guided tour if you prefer (see supplements).

At 16:30 you board the ferry for the incredibly scenic 3 hr 40 minute boat ride up the coast to the Sognefjord, also known as the King of Fjords being the country's largest and deepest fjord. The boat moors in the tiny hamlet of Vik and it's a short 100 metre walk from the quay to your comfortable hotel. Dinner at the hotel is included in your package.

Please note that the ferry from/to Bergen at either end of your trip is included in your package.

Day 3 : Vik - Arnefjord roundtrip
32 miles/52 kms

After breakfast you head out for first ride. Today's route leads you along peaceful back roads to the Arnefjord inlet and back again. This a great introduction to the region as you'll enjoy superb views of high mountain peaks and tumbling waterfalls. The tiny hamlet of Nese with its picturesque white clapperboard church is beautiful and you should also make a short detour up to the impressive Botnafossen waterfall. The small grocery store in Fram is a good place to pick-up some picnic provisions for an alfresco lunch surrounded by this fabulous scenery. You then return to Vik for a second night in your comfortable hotel. Dinner at the hotel is included in your package.

Day 4 : Vik - Vangsnes - Balestrand 15 miles/24 kms plus ferry

After breakfast you say goodbye to Vik and enjoy a lovely scenic 12 km ride beside the fjord to the village of Vangsnes. Make a small detour to admire the towering statue of "Fritjof" - a legendary figure from Norwegian history - before boarding the ferry (free for cyclists) for the short crossing to Dragsvik on the other side of the Sognefjord. You then have another very scenic 12 km ride around the Esefjord inlet to the busy little town of Balestrand which will be your home for the next two nights. If you fancy a little more cycling we recommend continuing along the lane south of the town to admire the traditional dragon-style villas along the shoreline. Dinner at the hotel is included in your package.

Day 5 : Balestrand - Menes roundtrip 36 miles/59 km

Today's very picturesque route leads you northwards around some of the Sognefjord's scenic inlets and back again to Balestrand. Around each bend of the ride you'll enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains whose pine clad flanks plunge steeply down to meet the clear calm waters of the fjord. Small picturesque hamlets and farms dot the landscape but it is very much mother nature who holds sway in this beautiful corner of the world. No evening meal is included tonight so you are free to make your own arrangements in a local restaurant. We recommend visiting the Ciderhouse They offer cidertasting at 1 pm and 4 pm and their excellent restaurat is open throughout the summer. It is recommended to reserve a table.

There is an option to shorten today's ride by booking a private boat straight to Menes from Balestrand and then returning along the shoreline to Balestrand - a distance of 30 kms. Please note the private boat must be prebooked locally in advance and costs 500NOK per person.

Day 6 : Leikanger - Sogndal - Hafslo
27 miles/44 kms

The day starts with a pleasant ferry ride from Balestrand to Leikanger followed by a scenic ride alongside the fjord to Sogndal - the road does go through two long tunnels but a bike path leads you safely around both of these. In Sogndal you follow a cycle path into the centre where you will may wish to stop to explore the various shops and cafes. Fruit orchards abound here and in the spring the fruit tree blossom adds to the area's natural beauty. You then cycle alongside the picturesque Barsnesfjord before taking on a 3 km climb to the lovely town of Hafslo that enjoys an idyllic location overlooking the lake of the same name. You will spend the next two nights in this charming little place. Dinner at the hotel is included in your package.

Day 7 : Hafslo - Solvorn - Skjolden
24 miles/38 kms

The day starts with an enjoyable descent to the very picturesque village of Solvorn. The white clapperboard houses on the edge of the fjord surrounded by fruit orchards is a very pleasing sight and you may wish to linger here a while before taking the ferry across the fjord to Urnes (50NOK per person - not included in package). In Urnes be sure to cycle or walk up the short hill to admire the wonderful stave church before heading along the fjord side road northwards. In the hamlet of Kroken look out for the quaint roadside self-service refrigerator selling local produce and a little further on the natural spectacle of the thundering Feigum waterfall cannot be missed.

You then follow a lovely quiet lane beside the fjord to the town of Skjolden. Please be aware that you will pass through two short tunnels on your way to Skjolden and you must use the lights provided on you bikes.
