Atlantic Coast to Algarve Cycling Holiday

New for 2024: A real get-away-from-it-all cycling holiday along the lower section of Portugal's gorgeous Atlantic Coast to Sagres in the Algarve. This holiday is all about spectacular coastal vistas, golden sandy beaches and pleasant relaxed cycling with very manageable daily distances.

Continuing down the coast from where our Lisbon Atlantic Coast South Cycling Holiday finishes, this route completes the journey down to Cape Vincent in the Algarve, Europe's most south-westerly point.

Atlantic Coast to Algarve Cycling HolidayThe stunning Atlantic Coast

The glorious beaches and epic coastal scenery take centre stage on this cycling holiday but you'll also discover tiny fishing villages, medieval castles and charming villages too.

Highlights have to be the wild, unspoilt beaches at Oceceixe and Bordeira, as well as the jaw dropping natural beauty of this sparsely populated, rugged coastline. You'll also enjoy exploring the, winding cobbled streets of lovely old towns such as Odeceixe and the erstwhile port of Alzejur.

The food in this region also deserves a mention. Simply prepared fish dishes with locally sourced salads and vegetables are divine and seemingly available everywhere

An added attraction of this unique holiday is that you'll be staying in unique and charming guest houses, often in quite remote locations as you make your way down the coast.

The cycling is relatively easy as the daily distances are very manageable but there are some short climbs to contend with every now and then. You'll be cycling on paved roads as well as ravel tracks. E-bikes are a recommended option for anyone concerned about taking on the climbs on a regular bike.

Day 1 : Arrive Vila Nova de Milfontes

You will be picked up from Lisbon or Faro airport and transferred to your hotel in the charming town of Vila Nova de Milfontes on the Alentejo coast. The rest of the day is yours to explore the town, head for the lovely beach or just relax.

Day 2 : Vila Nova de Milfontes - Touril
18 miles/30 kms

Your first ride leads you across the Mira River and out into open countryside. Before long you leave the paved road and follow a network of gravel paths through a rural landscape to the small village of Almograve. Here you may be tempted to make a small detour to admire or spend time on the lovely beach nearby. A few more kilometres of pleasant easy cycling deliver you to the charming little village of Cavaleiro. Take time to take in the old lighthouse on the coast at Cape Sardāo before pedalling on along the Atlantic Coast to your overnight stop in Touril.

Day 3 : Touril - Odeceixe
20 miles/32 kms

Today's ride is all about the rugged coastline, beautiful beaches and wonderful sea views. You'll be following a coastal track for much of the ride and you'll find yourself stopping regularly to fish out the camera to capture yet another amazing scene. This is scenic cycling at its best as the coastline is very sparsely populated. Stop for a coffee in Praia da Zambujeira do Mar before pedalling on past a succession of inviting bays and beaches. The final panorama, across the river mouth of the Seixe River, with its huge sand spit, is perhaps the most impressive of the day. From here it's a short ride inland along the river to the pleasant little town of Odeceixe, where you will spend the night.

Day 4 : Odeceixe - Arrifana
24 miles/38 kms

Today the route leads you away from the coast along a river valley to the old town of Aljezur. Prior to the 1722 earthquake, Aljezur was a busy trading port, the famous caravel ships would navigate their way up the deep river laden with goods. Today the river is a small stream but Aljezur still entices visitors with its medieval castle and narrow, winding streets. Afterwards the route heads back towards the coast. The beautiful beach at Praia de Monte Clerigo will definitely tempt you to stop and feel the sand between your toes as from here it's not far to your overnight stop in the coastal village of Arrifana.

Day 5 : Arrifana - Pedralva
28 miles/45 kms

After breakfast the route leads you inland once more and you begin to follow a quite lane across gently rolling terrain. Beach lovers are in for a treat today as the route then delivers you to the incredible Bordeira Beach. The views of the beach and coastline from the wooden walkway on the elevated bluff will live long in the memory. The route then leads you inland once more, past the pleasant hilltop town of Carrapateira and into an extensive pine forest. The route ducks and weaves through the peaceful countryside before delivering you to your charming overnight accommodation in Pedralva.

Day 6 : Pedralva - Sagres
25 miles/40 kms

Your final day's cycling is aptly very special with more unforgettable scenery. A final flourish of beautiful bays and gorgeous beaches fills your morning before you finally run out of land at Cape Sāo Vicente, the south westernmost point of Continental Europe. It really is a quite a dramatic scene and evokes images of sailors and pilgrims who sailed past here into the unknown in days gone by. A final ride along the Algarve coast brings you to the seaside town of Sagres where you will be spoilt for choice for nice restaurants and bars to celebrate completing your Portuguese cycling adventure.

Day 7 : Departure

After breakfast it's time to head for home or your next adventure. A transfer to Lisbon or Faro airport is included in your package.
