Flexitreks Cycling HolidayCyclists on the Adige cycle path

Highlights include the stunning alpine scenery that surrounds you as you follow the cycle path southwards, the charming medieval towns of Bolzano and Trento and the sensational views on the descent to Lake Garda.

This very easy route, follows a glorious, gently descending cycle path. As such, it is suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities .

Itinerary

After checking into your hotel the rest of the day is yours to explore. Perhaps take the 30 minute cable car ride up to the Hafelekar as the views of the on the impressive Nordkette mountain surrounding alps and the city are wonderul. If you are feeling more energetic, climb the 455 stairs up to the Bergisel Ski Jump to appreciate the stomach-churning view that awaits contestants before they begin their descent. This evening enjot a stroll through the old town.

This morning you and your bikes will be transferred up the valley to the Brenner Pass from where your cycling adventure begins. The route is mostly downhill and follows an old railway line along the Isarco valley. You cycle through small villages including Fortezza with its ancient fort. Enjoy a well-earned break alongside Lake Varna before riding on to the pretty alpine town of Bressanone, your overnight stop. Take a stroll around the cobbled streets of the historic old town and you'll eventually find your way to the beautiful town square, dominated by the ornate 18th century cathedral.

This morning you continue along the lush Isarco valley, past vineyards and orchards. You may choose to visit the huge and impressive Sabiona Benedictine monastery, built on a rocky-outcrop above the valley. The alpine scenery on either side of the wide valley is jaw dropping and it almost feels like cheating to coast along the gently descending cycle path. The path flirts with the Isarco River, which is actually the 2nd largest river in Italy. Today's destination is the medieval town Bolzano (where you spend your first night) so in the afternoon you can relax or take in the sights that you did not manage to see during your first visit.

Today there are two route options to choose from. The easiest and most direct route leads you south along the lower Adige valley beside the river which is bigger now, swollen by its confluence with the Eisack River at Bolzano. The second, slightly longer option includes a couple of short climbs but the payoff is a ride through the stunning Caladaro Valley to Lake Caldaro. The lake is one of the warmest in the alps and just perfect for a swim if the weather is hot. The two routes converge in the Adige Valley near the town of Ora from where you continue your journey south. For centuries this wide fertile valley has been one of the primary north-south trading routes through the alps and the scenery is spectacular. Tiny, white alpine villages, perched on the green mountainsides on either side of the valley, are overlooked by towering granite peaks. The easy, level cycle path sticks resolutely to the valley floor leading you through the small pleasant villages of Ora, Egna and Salomo before arriving at Trento, today’s destination. Trento has a long and colourful history, thanks to its strategic position on one of the Alps’ main passes. Head for the picturesque medieval city centre to absorb the atmosphere and learn more.

Please note: It is possible to shorten this route by taking the train from several statons along the route

Leaving Trento you continue downhill to Rovereto where you leave the Adige River and cycle up a shallow ridge to escape the valley. The short climb is rewarded with an exhilarating freewheel downhill to stunning Lake Garda. You can relax now and enjoy a wonderful ferry ride along the entire length of the Lake from Torbole on the north shore to Peschiera in the south. The scenery is spectacular with high limestone cliffs and tree-lined hillsides plunging down into the deep blue lake. Pretty villages line the shore and brightly coloured windsurfing sails flit to and fro across the lake’s surface. Disembark in Peschiera and make your way to your nearby hotel. Take time to visit Sirmione, a medieval settlement on a tiny peninsular protruding out into the Lake.

Leave Lake Garda behind and cycle eastwards through open countryside to the Roman city of Verona. Shakespeare chose the beautiful city as the setting for Romeo and Juliet and you can visit Casa di Giulietta, purported to be the location of the famous balcony scene. The wonderful Arena, a crumbling roman amphitheater still hosts lavish productions today and you may wish to time your arrival to coincide with a particular performance – use this link to research further but be sure to book in advance as most performances are sold out months in advance. Ascend the Lamberti tower for a great view over the city, enjoy an ice cream in the buzzing Piazza Bra and stroll through the atmospheric old town exploring the maze-like streets.

Please note: Today's route is 60 km if you start from Desenzano and 35 km if you start from Peschiera.

After breakfast it’s time to check-out and head for home or your next adventure.

Well managed, the Ride With GPS was a good way to set out the whole thing (though we ported the gpx files into Strava where we got a load of photos of the route).

Thank you Allan. Yes, if you're used to using Strava then its a good idea to export the GPX files across to that app.

A fantastic trip starting from alpine scenery and Germanic architecture and ending with rolling hills and cypress trees with full Italian feel with wonderful scenery on the way. The weather was a touch inclement in places (headwind one day and drizzle another) but that didn’t detract from the wonderful journey. The route was well mapped throughout, (bar a couple of places where the path was being dug up that forced us onto moderately main roads) and the hotels were lovely. Starting could have been a little disconcerting for some (and certainly wasn’t exactly auspicious) as the taxi just dropped us in a mall car park, pointed at the bikes then left, but we weren’t unduly worried. Overall, it was a great trip and we’re very glad we did this specific variant (Brenner to Verona) of the Adige options.

Rated easy and was easy. Didn’t have to get off the bike once! Excellent off road cycle paths 90% of the way along river valleys with mountains all around. Beautiful. Interesting towns to stay in and villages to pass through.

Couldn't have said it better ourselves, one of our favourite routes, thanks Trevor

We had no briefing what-so-ever before we set off. The chap shrugged his shoulders and said “follow brown signs”! This was somewhat worrying since this was our first ever cycling holiday. One lady in our group of 4 was given a mans bike and we had no repair kit or pump between the 4 of us (meant to have one between two). Eventually the bike was changed to a ladies bike but never did fit properly and we were given one repair kit.
Andy - January, 23 Jan 2019
Very sorry to hear about these issues at the start Jane. It is most unusual and we have passed your comments on to our local supplier for comment. I'm glad that, despite these initial set-backs, you enjoyed the holiday overall.

The cycles provided were very good, with one panier and a a capacious handlebar bag. The route itself was quite varied. In the main downhill, or on the level, although the optional route by the Kalteresee did involve some stiff climbs. I was travelling by myself, but often bumped into other people, mainly Norwegian and German, doing the same trip and we were able to chat and compare notes. I particularly chose this trip because of the voyage down Lake Garda - very well worth it.
Andy - July, 25 Jul 2018
Many thanks for taking the time to review this popular route. The optional diversion via Kalterersee does indeed involve a bit more climbing but we think the wonderful views, as you descend towards the lake, make it all worthwhile. The ferry ride the length of Lake Garda is both spectacular and a welcome opportunity to relax after the morning ride from Trento.

Althought there were little issues, the company were always prompt to sort them out. The material given to us was great and the cycle way was fairly easy to find - only a few moments when we had to consult the instructions . I would recoments a gps mapping on the phone. We used Here we go which is an offline gps- especially for gettting to the hotel or onto the cucle track if you het lost. One word to the company - it would good to move the gear to hotels as early as possible - a couple of days arriving wet and having to wait for our gear was a bit annoying- but in the end a shower and relax on the bed worked well before the gear arrived so Im not rating the experience down becase of this. And - dont forget to give the e-bike charger to the at the begining of the journy - this will sort a lot of running around. Thanks to Alice for your communications and creating a txt line so we could sort any issues immediately . Over all the scenery was fabulous, the hotels good the ride exhilarating and the bikes great. The culture most interesting. Loved it.
Andy - October, 14 Oct 2017
We really appreciate the detailed review Carolyn. Our local supplier always tries to get the bags to the next hotels ASAP but sometimes logistics simply don't allow. For that reason, we always suggest taking a simple change of clothing in the pannier - if you think you'll arrive quite early.

Pros: - good quality leisure bicycles - luggage was always there when we arrived at the hotel - hotels were very good and a nice variety - great routes along nice paths Cons: - the voucher said we could take the ferry at 2 different times, but didn't specify that the second ferry goes to another town which adds an hour of cycling (only 14km but in the dark along dangerous roads) - (tiny thing) it would have been useful to be recommended a good app to use with the GPX files

Great hotels. Smooth transfers. Really enjoyed it. Bikes paths were excellent. Highly recommended. Some even better ifs: Lady who collected us from Innsbruck spoke little English. The front pannier boxes couldn't hold the maps on the outside but route was easy to follow. Would have loved a stay at the North End of Lake Garda as well.
Andy - July, 03 Jul 2017
So glad you enjoyed your cycling holiday Michael. We are actually looking at how we can incorporate a night at the north end of Lake Garda into his trip in the future - great minds and all that!

A brilliant holiday from start to finish. From the moment we got our bikes we were overwhelmed by breathtaking views, literally something new at every turn, could hardly continue for wanting to take pictures. Bikes were reliable and well equipped, directions were almost foolproof and maps were useful for negotiating diversions. (Information for the Brennero to Bolzano section was better than for Bolzano onward). Classed as easy cycling as mostly downhill but don't be fooled - some stiff climbs along the way might challenge some cyclists. I would add that it is always best to stick to lunch break suggestions - there is often nothing suitable beyond. Always carry something to keep you going. We also wish we had taken more snacks and a coffee on board the ferry.

- the service I received from Ally from Flexitreks was fantastic. She was prompt, friendly and helpful. She is an asset to your company and you should ensure you look after her! - the local contact who picked us up in Innsbruck unfortunately didn't speak any English (none at all) which made the initial start off a little challenging but we got there in the end.

I was very impressed by the hotels and the cycling tracks for the first few days. Everything was well sign posted and easy to follow. The last day (Cycling to Verona) was very different with hardly any sign posts and the instructions in the booklet were not matching up with the street signs and detours etc very well which made thing a bit challenging but we got there in the end.
Ally - August, 02 Aug 2016
Thanks for the review David, its always nice to hear you're appreciated! Sorry about the language problem on arrival and the tricky directions in and around Verona, I've fed this back to our local people and asked them to investigate. I look forward to helping you with your next cycling holiday.
