After a night in fascinating Porto at the mouth of the Douro river you begin your journey south towards the Portuguese capital. For much of the route you will enjoy fabulous views along the wild coastline, you'll also pass many, often deserted fine sand beaches washed by Atlantic rollers.

Each night you will stay in a small village or town, often with a historical old town to explore on foot.

Highlights of this memorable route include Aveiro, a beautiful old town often referred to as "Portuguese Venice" for its canals and traditional Moliceiro boats. The glorious, unspoilt beaches around Praia de Mira are sensational and the charming old fishing villages of Nazaré, Peniche and Ericeira are a delight to explore on foot. You'll also love wandering the winding flower-filled alleyways of Obidos. Finally, all this is of course bookended with stays in the historic and fascinating cities of Porto and Lisbon

This is a moderate route with some short climbs along the way that will suit leisure cyclists with a reasonably good level of fitness. if you have concerns about the daily distances or climbs then we highly recommend opting for an e-bike to reduce the grade of this route down to leisurely.

Day 1 : Porto

On arrival, make you way into Porto to your hotel. The rest of day is yours to explore this beautiful and vibrant city. Take a stroll along the banks of the Douro River below the famous Dom Luis I bridge. Centuries ago this where British merchant ships moored-up to collect cargoes of port wine. Today you will find an array of hip new bars and cool outdoor restaurants lining the quayside. At some point we highly recommend you try the local speciality pastèis de nata (simply delicious custard tarts) as well as visiting one of the city's famous port wine cellars. As you wander the cobbled streets of the old quarter you will find many facades tiled with the traditional blue and white azulejo tiles, perhaps the most beautiful and striking example is the Church of St. Ildefonso. In the evening you will have to choose from a dizzying choice of fine restaurants throughout the city

Day 2 : Porto to Furadouro
25 miles/40 kms

And so it begins, your first ride tracks the southern bank of Douro River out to its mouth at the Douro Estuary Nature Reserve. Yout then turn south and begin to follow a very pleasant cycle path along the coast. You will pass beach after beach on today's ride so it's a good idea to pack some swimwear in your pannier in case you feel like taking a dip at some point. The Atlantic breakers to your right coupled with the procession of small seaside villages and towns to your left make this a highly enjoyable first day in the saddle. The small town of Espinho witgh its white sandy beach and good choice of restaurants is a good place to stop for lunch before cycling through the peaceful, shady pine forest for the final 10km of today;s ride. Your destination is the small seaside town of Furadouro. The wide, white sand beach invites you to cool off with a post ride dip before sampling one of the towns fine fish restaurants.

Day 3 : Furadouro to Aveiro
25 miles/40 kms

Today's ride leads you alongside the Aveiro Lagoon, one of Europe's last remaining untouched coastal marshlands. This 45 kilometre long lagoon is a haven for numerous bird species and a fisherman's paradise. The town of Torreira marks the halfway point of today's ride and is a good place for a lunch break. In the village of São Jacinto, a little further on, we highly recommend a short detour out to the São Jacinto nature reserve, a magnificent wide expanse of Atlantic breakers and endless sand dunes. Afterwards it's a ferry ride across the mouth of the lagoon followed by a short ride to the bustling little town of Aveiro where you will stop for the night. Aveiro is often dubbed the Portuguese Venice thanks to its small network of canals however, instead of gondolas, Aveiro has Moliceiros, - brightly painted wooden boats, once used for harvesting seaweed but now used for canal cruises.

Day 4 : Aveiro to Praia de Mira
22 miles/35 kms

Today's very pleasant route leads you back out to the Atlantic coast alongside a canal and then beside the Aveiro lagoon southwards. The colourful beach houses of Costa Nova are iconic and always a draw for photographers. The Atlantic Ocean is a few hundred metres to your right and numerous access paths give access to the glorious and peaceful sandy beach. Vagueira is a nice little beachside village where you might want to stop for lunch before following a peaceful lane through green fields for about 10 kilometres. The ride finishes in the pleasant little beach town of Praia de Mira. As you have come to expect by now, another fabulous sandy beach awaits if you fancy a dip. Afterwards you can try one of the town's many great seafood restaurants.

Day 5 : Praia de Mira - Figueira da Foz
28 miles/45 kms

Today's ride leads you through a landscape of sand dunes and forests. The crickets provide the soundtrack to your ride and the glorious beach off to your right seems endless. At Cabo Mondego stop to admire the stunning views along the coast to today's destination, the charming little town of Figueira da Foz. This winding alleys of this bustling little place are a joy to explore on foot and reveal a wealth of great little bars and restaurants to choose from.

Day 6 : Figueira da Foz – Pedrogao/Praia da Vieira
28 miles/45 kms

Today's route leads you inland slightly and gently ascends, making its way through a succession of small villages. After a while you turn towards the coast once more and enjoy a peaceful ride through the extensive pine forests. At the coast, you turn south and cycle past huge sand dunes. Your destination today is either Pdrogao or Praia da Vieira, both are small, quiet seaside towns with glorious, fine-sand beaches.

Day 7 : Pedrogao/Praia da Vieira – Sao Martinho/Foz do Arelho
40 miles/65 kms

Today you continue south, past more towering sand dunes to the pretty town of Sao Pedro de Moel. The views along the coast from the cliff-top of this charming little place are breathtaking. more easy cycling leads you past a few more quiet seaside villages to the bigger town of Nazaré. This lovely old town is a joy to explore and is a good place for a lunch break as it has several superb fish restaurants. Be sure also to venture out to the lighthouse on the edge of town for some superb sea views. It is off this point that during the winter months the world's best surfers ride some of the biggest waves ever ridden. You then continue down the coast to your overnight stop in either Sao Martinho or Foz do Arelho, two lovely beachside towns.

Day 8 : Sao Martinho/Foz do Arelho – Peniche
31 miles/50 kms

Today's lovely ride leads you around Lake Obidos to the beautiful town of Obidos. Here you can visit the castle standing guard over the town or wander the narrow, flower-filled lanes lined with traditionally painted houses. The route then leads you back, past the lake to the coast and southwards. Your destination today is the bustling town of Peniche. Popular with surfers thanks to it's lovely long curving beach, Peniche enjoys a spectacular setting on a peninsula, jutting out into the Atlantic. It's worth cycling or walking out to the point at Cabo Carvoeiro to take in the amazing views from the sandstone cliffs.

Day 9 : Peniche – Ericeira
40 miles/65 kms

Today's incredibly scenic ride continues southwards. The route flirts with the ocean, occasionally revealing truly stunning views along the wild coastline. At other times it turns inland, treating you to a different landscape of gently rolling hills, vineyards and small peaceful villages. Along the way you'll pass quiet bays and deserted beaches so it's a good idea to have your swim things in your pannier in case you fancy some beach time. Your destination today is the quaint, fishing village of Ericeria. You'll love spending a night in this atmospheric little place with it's winding cobbled alleys, amazing sea views and great restaurants.

Day 10 : Ericeira – Cascais
34 miles/55 km

Today's undulating ride includes a couple of notable climbs but by now your legs are well up to the task plus the views make it all worth while. The route leads you past traditional dry-stone-walls and peaceful villages with pastel coloured houses. Once again, the sea-views steal the show, especially the stunning panorama from the Cabo da Roca lighthouse. An exhilarating descent delivers you to the lovely beach at Guincho and from there it's an easy ride along the coast to Cascais, where you will spend the night. Cascais is a delightful place with a lovely beachside promenade and a lovely old town to explore.

Day 11 : Cascais - Lisbon
25 miles/40 kms

Follow the cycle path along the shoreline to the town of Estoril. Not long afterwards you will reach the mouth of the River Tagus and the old fortification, the Belem Tower which signifies you are entering Lisbon. Ride under the suspension bridge and into the heart of the city.

The rest of the day is your to explore Portugal historic and vibrant capital. The cobbled streets and soft colours of this medieval city are often bathed in the special Atlantic light that gives it a seemingly ethereal quality. There are many Miradours (beautiful viewpoints) around the city and our favourites include São Pedro de Acâtara, a tiny park offering superb views across the city and great coffee, as well as Miradouro da Graca, from where you can admire the 11th century Moorish Palace and Lisbon's huge natural harbour in the distance. You should also not miss Bairro Alto, a picturesque bohemian quarter of the city where you will find some great bars, restaurants and the traditional Fado Houses where you can listen to this unique style of singing.

Day 12 : Departure

After breakfast it's time to check-out and head for home or your next adventure.

Bikes

On this tour you can choose between a regular bike, a regular Plus bike or an electric bike.

Regular bikes provided are modern alloy framed models with 21 speeds. The bikes come equipped with pannier, lock and a repair kit with pump.

The regular Plus bike offers a step up in terms of components (hydraulic Magura brakes HS 11, Shimano Deore XT) and the frame provides a more sporty riding position. High quality, suntour suspension forks ensure a comfortable ride on these bikes. The bikes come equipped with pannier, lock and a repair kit with pump.

Electric bikes are also available.

We suggest you bring your own helmet for safety and hygiene reasons. Alternatively, helmets for adults are available to buy (payable locally, €45). This must be advised at the time of booking.
