On arrival in Prague make your way to your first hotel. After check-in the rest of the day is yours to explore. Don’t miss the atmospheric old town with its famous town square and astronomical clock, and make sure you stroll over elegant Charles Bridge to Mala Strana and the castle district.

Today you’ll be picked up from your hotel after breakfast and transferred south to Cesky Krumlov, one of the Czech Republic’s most picturesque medieval towns in the heart of South Bohemia. Once there you’ll have time to look around this ancient riverside settlement or take to your bikes and explore the surrounding area.

After breakfast your cycling adventure begins. The route leads you out of Cesky Krumlov and along the scenic Vltava river valley. Stop at Zlata Koruna – the golden crown monastery – then later at Ceske Budejovice for a spot of lunch, and maybe a glass of the original Budweiser beer which is brewed here. Afterwards you continue through pleasant countryside to Hluboka nad Vlatavou. You’ll spend the night in this elegant riverside town with its grand fairytale castle.

Today’s ride takes you further north on an idyllic, forest cycle path beside the winding river. After a while you’ll notice the river getting wider. This is due to the dam that you’ll pass just before the town of Tyn. After passing through Tyn you leave the river and cycle through rural countryside to the handsome town of Pisek which sits on the banks of the Otava River. The town straddles both sides of the river and a beautiful, medieval stone bridge connects the two. The cobbled streets of this lovely town are a joy to explore on foot.

Today is the longest ride of the week, as you pedal through picturesque villages and beautiful countryside to Pribam, a town with a centuries old mining tradition. There’s lots to see today, including beautiful Orlik Castle, that sits on a bluff looking out across the Vltava River. The river is more like a lake here due to the huge dam that blocks its path further downstream. Nearby you can also marvel at the impressive single-span bridge that spans the river. You’ll spend the night in Pribram, an important mining centre since the Middle Ages. More recently the town became known for a rather more chilling reason. During the Communist regime political prisoners were forced to work at the Pribram uranium mines. The mining museum is well worth a visit. The town also offers a swimming pool and aqua park.

In the morning you’ll have the chance to visit Svata Hora – the monastery of the Holy Mountain – a well-known local pilgrimage spot. Back on the bikes it’s a lovely ride through the picturesque forested region of the Brdy hills. Although you are in a very rural region you can’t help noticing that you are cycling on 9 meter wide paved roads. These arteries are leftover from a time when the area was used exclusively by the military. Your destination tonight is the quaint little town of Zebrak.

Leaving Zebrak it won’t be long before you come to the brooding hilltop ruins of Tocnik Castle. From there it’s a pleasant ride through rolling hills to Beroun in the heart of limestone karst country, where you’ll see some impressive rocky valleys and caves. Then you’ll follow the valley path beside the Berounka River to Karlstejn, with its Gothic castle perched on a rocky outcrop above the village. You’ll spend the night in this pretty little village in the forest.

For your final day on the bikes you’ll be taking a flat, easy route along first the River Berounka then the Vltava all the way to the Prague. You’ll be staying in a central hotel so there’ll be plenty of time to further explore the numerous sights of the Czech capital. Needless to say, there is a dizzying choice of bars and restaurants in which to celebrate completing your Bohemian Cycling Holiday.

After breakfast it’s time to check out and head for home or your next adventure.
