The Adige river, the second longest river in Italy, begins life close to the Austrian border at the head of the Resia pass. A scenic, alpine cycle path follows the river's course as it gently descends through fruit orchards and pretty alpine villages to the medieval town of Bolzano and on to the Roman city of Verona.
We offer a number of different cycling holidays along the Adige River, from our short 4 night, Bolzano to Verona Cycling Break to our eternally popular, 7 night, Adige River to Lake Garda Cycling holiday which includes a lazy day on the north shore of beautiful Lake Garda at the end of the holiday.
The Adige River Cycle Path starts at the head of the Resia Pass close to the Austrian Italian border and offers an unforgettable journey through some of northern Italy's most stunning landscapes. Starting in the small village of Resia nestled high in the Alps the route begins with dramatic mountain scenery and the iconic bell tower rising from Lake Resia’s surface. The path then descends through the lush Venosta Valley, winding past orchards, vineyards, and charming alpine villages like Glorenza and Naturno.
As you follow the Adige River, the terrain becomes increasingly gentle and accessible, ideal for all levels of cyclists. Passing through Merano and Bolzano, the trail offers a blend of natural beauty and rich Tyrolean-Italian culture. Along the well-maintained bike path, frequent rest stop options, and efficient signage make for a smooth and enjoyable ride.
Continuing south, the scenery transitions to Mediterranean landscapes, with cypress trees, olive groves, and sprawling vineyards. The ride ends at the sparkling shores of Lake Garda, Italy’s largest lake, where cyclists can relax and take in the alpine-meets-lakefront panorama.
Covering over 300 km, the Adige River Cycle Path is both a physical adventure and a cultural immersion, perfect for those seeking a scenic, leisurely long-distance ride.
Our easy cycling holidays offer short daily rides on mostly level terrain. These rides are particularly recommended for newcomers to cycling holidays and for families.
Our leisurely cycle holidays will suit those who are reasonably fit through regular exercise of one kind or another – not necessarily cycling. On the whole, the terrain will be level but there may also be a few small hills to contend with along the way too. Daily rides will typically take around 3 – 4 hours to complete.
Our moderate cycle holidays are for regular cyclists, who are used to longer rides with regular climbs. A good level of fitness is needed and you can expect to be in the saddle for between 4 and 5 hours each day.
These holidays are for seasoned cyclists who cycle long distances regularly and who enjoy the thrill of long days in the saddle. There will undoubtedly be some challenging climbs along the way and you can expect to cover between 55 and 75 miles each day.
