The Danube Cycle Path, stretches over 1,700 miles, following the course of the Danube from its source in the Black Forest of Germany to its delta at the Black Sea Coast. The path traverses ten countries, offering a diverse cultural and scenic experience for cyclists. We offer a range of Danube cycling holidays including hotel to hotel holidays as well as bike and boat holidays and single centre options too.
First-timers should consider the Passau to Vienna cycling holiday as this really is the classic Danube route. Much of the river's most celebrated scenery and landmarks can be found along the cycle path between Passau and Vienna. On this holiday you'll see the majestic Danube loop and the charming wine villages of the Wachau Valley.
Further back upstream, in Germany, the young Danube wends it's way through Bavaria towards the Austrian border and here too you will find a variety of wonderfully peaceful cycling routes. Why not start at the actual source of the Danube, riding from Donaueschingen to Donauwörth.
Bike and boat cycling holidays on the Danube are incredibly popular as they offer cyclists the opportunity to see even more of the river in one holiday. The most popular routes start and finish in Passau on the German/Austrian border and head downstream to Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest. A good example is our 4 Countries holiday aboard the MS Primadonna. Each day you'll disembark for relaxing riverside rides that unveil more of the Danube's superb scenery and historic towns.
The delightful, medieval town of Passau sits at the confluence of three rivers, the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz. Our 3 Rivers Single Centre Break allows you to settle into a hotel in Passau for 4 nights and enjoy daily rides along the riverbanks.
May to September is the most popular time for cycling holidays along the Danube. If possible, try to go during the months of May, June or September as July and August can include some quite hot and humid days
Our easy cycling holidays offer short daily rides on mostly level terrain. A typical day’s ride will take 2 – 3 hours at a leisurely pace and the remainder of the day will be free for you to explore further or simply relax. These rides are particularly recommended for newcomers to cycling holidays and for families.
Our leisurely cycle holidays will suit those who are reasonably fit through regular exercise of one kind or another – not necessarily cycling. On the whole, the terrain will be level but there may also be a few small hills to contend with along the way too. Daily rides will typically take around 3 – 4 hours to complete.
Our moderate cycle holidays are for regular cyclists, who are used to longer rides with regular climbs. A good level of fitness is needed and you can expect to be in the saddle for between 4 and 5 hours each day.
These holidays are for seasoned cyclists who cycle long distances regularly and who enjoy the thrill of long days in the saddle. There will undoubtedly be some challenging climbs along the way and you can expect to cover between 55 and 75 miles each day.
