Colmar
Only 190 kms long and 50 kms wide, Alsace is the smallest region in France but within its borders it manages to pack over a hundred enchanting villages, characterised by rows of colourfully painted, half-timbered houses and winding cobbled streets. No less than four of the villages you will visit have made it on to the list of The Most Beautiful Villages in France – Eguisheim, Riquewihr, Hunawihr and Mittelbergheim.
The cycling is leisurely and you’ll be averaging about 28 miles/ 45 kms per day. The first three days are pretty level and then as you head north along the base of the Vosges you will encounter a few hills. These are mercifully short however and you can always take a break or get off and walk for a bit. It’s worth noting we also offer electric bikes to rent on this tour.

This relaxing cycle route leads you along the famous Alsace Wine Route from Strasbourg to Colmar. The easy daily rides lead you along quiet vineyard-lined lanes to the most beautiful wine villages in Alsace.
Cycling near Riquewihr
Your first night is spent in Strasbourg where you can visit the imposing Notre Dame Cathedral, with its intricate astronomical clock, the baroque style Opera House and ‘Petite France’ – a picturesque area between the two rivers crammed with half-timbered houses and narrow cobbled streets. You then cycle beside the meandering Canal La Bruche out into the wine region and begin following the famous wine route south.
You’ll stay in beautiful wine villages each night and cover, on average, around 22 kms each day (more on some days, less on others). These short daily rides are designed to give you plenty of time to explore the plethora of gorgeous Alsatian villages that pepper the route. Half-timbered, brightly painted medieval houses line the narrow winding cobbled streets of these well preserved villages where little has changed for centuries.
Highlights of this trip include Strasbourg and the villages of Obernai, Barr and Andlau. The village of Riquewihr is especially charming and Eguisheim was recently voted the country’s favourite village by the French themselves. You’ll also love the simple pleasure of the daily rides through the endless vineyards with the green flanks of the Vosges Mountains in the distance and the stone church spires rising above the vines.
The final night in the bustling town of Colmar with its picturesque ‘Little Venice’ centre is a fitting finale to this very enjoyable route.
This route is easy and can be enjoyed by anyone with a basic level of fitness. There are some undulations along the way but they are always mercifully short. You’ll be riding on quiet lanes and cycle paths most of the time. E-bikes are an available option on this route.

A patchwork of neat vineyards covers the undulating countryside, interrupted only by gorgeous limestone villages and ornate chateaux.
Finally, you cross the estuary to the celebrated Haut Médoc wine region and follow the cycle path into the centre of bustling and vibrant Bordeaux.
This is a leisurely route that can be enjoyed by anyone with an average level of fitness. Much of it is cycle path with the remainder on quiet country lanes.

On this 7 night holiday you will cycle from Carentan at the base of the Cotentin Peninsula, along the undulating Normandy coast to Honfleur at the mouth of the Seine river. Along the way you’ll take in gorgeous beaches, rolling green countryside and pretty Norman villages.
Beaumont-en-Auge
This is D-Day country of course and the route visits each of the 5 beaches that were used for the mass allied landings that took place here on the 6th of June 1944. During the ride you’ll come across all manner of sights, relics, museums and memorials that acknowledge the fierce battles and huge loss of life that occurred in this now quiet and peaceful corner of France during World War II.
Aside from the D-Day connection this is a naturally beautiful stretch of coastline and the route leads you to some picture-perfect little towns and villages that feature the traditional timber-framed, brightly coloured houses so typical of this area. You’ll venture inland to some delightful little places where wonderful local produce such as Calvados brandy and Pont-l’Évêque soft cheese can be sampled and bought.
On the Cote Fleurie, you’ll cycle along the seaside promenade at Cabourg and enjoy the elegant resorts of Deauville and Trouville. The medieval port of Honfleur is sure to be another highlight as is the peaceful ride through the apple orchards of the Auge region.
The rolling countryside here is beautiful but this also means of course that you have climbs to contend with each day. Most of them are mercifully short but nonetheless you will need to be in reasonably good shape to enjoy this route. If you are at all concerned about your fitness levels then consider renting an e-bike which will make things a lot easier and take the sting out of the climbs.

If you haven’t got the time to do our full, 7 day, D-Day Beaches Cycling Holiday then this short cycling break is for you. You’ll spend three nights in the charming town of Bayeaux, which besides being a thoroughly charming little town is of course also home to the world-famous Bayeux Tapestry. From here you will enjoy two days of cycling out into the stunning Norman countryside, visiting some of the towns and beaches that became famous and infamous during the D-Day landings
La Pointe du Hoc
The first ride will take you east along the coast to the bustling little town of Arromanches where the British forces came ashore on what was code named Gold Beach. On the town’s beautiful sandy beach you can still see the remains of Churchill’s ingenious Mulberry Harbours that allowed the ships to unload heavy equipment and troops more easily. The D-Day Museum in the town centre is also well worth a visit to learn more about the invasion.
The second ride heads west to Omaha Beach. Today it’s an idyllic, long, wide sandy beach but on the 6th of June 1944 it was hell on earth for the American troops struggling to come ashore and form a beachhead in the face of fierce, well dug-in German opposition. The American Cemetery just above the beach is a very serene and moving place that invariably leaves a lasting impression on its visitors. From here you can either head back to Bayeux through the charming Norman countryside or bolt on an additional 9 miles by cycling out to La Pointe du Hoc. This strategically important high point on the coast offers some great views as well as a story of incredible courage involving US Rangers.
The Normandy countryside is undulating so you will have regular climbs to contend with throughout both rides. That said, none are too long or steep but if you do have any concerns you might like to consider renting an e-bike rather than a regular hybrid bike – both are available on this holiday.

Museums and memorials to the momentous events of 6th of June 1944 punctuate the route which also features rolling green countryside, fine sandy beaches and gorgeous old Norman villages.
This beautiful area of Normandy with its verdant green countryside and charming little towns with half-timbered buildings will forever be linked with the D-Day landings of World War II when the allied forces came ashore and began the battle to claim back Europe from Nazi Germany. All along this coastline there are memorials and museums that tell the stories of bravery and tragedy that unfolded in June 1944.
Longues sur Mer - Defences
The route starts in the small town of Carentan from where you will cycle out to Utah Beach via the pretty village of St. Mère Église, the first town to be liberated by the allies. The shell craters at La Pointe Hoc are still very visible and the sea of white head stones above Omaha beach at the American Cemetery are very moving indeed.
The remains of Churchill's Mulberry harbours at Arromanches on Gold Beach look like great concrete whales beached in the shallows and a visit to the town's D-Day Museum brings Operation Overlord to life once again.
In between the memorials, museums and historical artifacts, the natural beauty of the Norman countryside asserts itself at every opportunity. The verdant green countryside is bordered by steep cliffs leading to huge fine-sand beaches and the traditional half-timbered houses, so typical of this area, blend in to the timeless landscape perfectly.
The route leads you along bike paths and greenways as well as secondary roads. There are a few sections on slightly busier roads but these are kept to a minimum. The route does feature some ups and downs and as such merits its leisurely to moderate grading. E-bikes are available and worth considering if you are at all concerned about the hills.

Arles
As an introduction to this stunning region of France, this tour is in a class of its own. Visit Arles, where Van Gough enjoyed his most creative period, the stunningly beautiful medieval village of Le Baux de Provence as well as the Pont du Gard, Europe’s best preserved Roman aqueduct, and the gorgeous old town of Avignon, the City of Popes.
The cycling is relatively easy, following bike paths and quiet roads most of the time. There are a few hills along the way but there’s no rush so take a break to enjoy the view as often as you please.
Please note that this holiday also operates in the reverse direction.
