You'll actually be following a section of the famous Via Claudia Augusta, a trans-alpine path established by the Romans in 46 AD. The daily sections shouldn't take more than around 2 - 3 hours of continuous cycling at a leisurely pace so there is plenty of time to stop and explore the pretty little villages you'll pass along the way.
The going is very easy and you'll be on a beautiful alpine cycle path the whole way. As such, this is an excellent choice for people who are new to cycling holidays and/or families with young children. You’ll stay in comfortable hotels in charming alpine towns and villages along the route.

The route starts high in the Italian Alps at the head of the Resia/Reschen Pass and follows the Adige River as it descends along the stunning Venosta Valley. You’ll be cycling on a traffic free, tarmac cycle path. The going is easy, being predominantly downhill, allowing plenty of time to drink in the panoramic alpine vistas that unfold all around.
You’ll cycle past small villages and medieval towns, some of which originate from Roman times as this is the route of the Via Claudia Augusta, a trans-alpine path first opened in 46 AD. As you descend, the fruit orchards begin to give way to vineyards and the Adige turns from a tumbling mountain stream to a fully fledged river.
Shortly after the town of Trento you face the one, short, easy climb of the route – don’t worry it’s not that long and there’s no penalty for walking or taking a breather. Your efforts are rewarded with an exhilarating descent to the stunning northern shore of Lake Garda. You will spend the last night of your tour in one of the pretty lakeside towns on the northern shore, such as Riva, Torbole or Nago or in Arco in the northern end in an attractive setting.
The vast majority of this route is on tarmac cycle paths with some very short stretches on quiet roads. The route is predominantly downhill or level making it a good choice for families and anyone with a basic level of fitness.

The small village of Resia at the head of the Resia pass, just 3 kms from the Austrian border is the starting point for this easy, scenic cycling holiday. The picturesque lake adjacent to the village is not a lake at all but a reservoir and the rather incongruous sight of a church bell tower protruding from the water marks the location of one of several villages submerged following the construction of the nearby dam in 1950.
Verona
From Resia a pleasant cycle path leads you gently downhill, along the valley floor, past pretty villages and stunning alpine scenery. Throughout the route you'll never be too far from the Adige river and you'll witness it grow from a tumbling mountain stream to a deep wide river. You'll overnight in small alpine villages as well as enchanting medieval towns and cities, such as Bolzano and Trento, along the way .
Over 6 days you'll descend from high alpine pastures through huge fruit orchards and vineyards to the shores of Lake Garda and finally the ancient Roman city of Verona on the plains of Lombardy. Many of the villages and towns along the way originate from Roman times as this is also the route of the Via Claudia Augusta, a trans-alpine path first opened in 46 AD.
There really is only one climb on this whole route. It's not very long or steep and your efforts are rewarded with a jaw dropping view down the length of Lake Garda. After an exhilarating descent you enjoy a ferry ride down to the southern end of the lake.
Your final ride leads you to Verona a historic city known for its Arena (Roman Colosseum) and many other ancient sights. Head to the bustling Piazza Bra, adjacent to the Arena, in the early evening for a meal and a drink to celebrate completing your journey.
This is an easy route the vast majority of which is on a gently descending well-maintained cycle path. The daily sectors are easily managed in around three hours or so of continuous cycling so there's plenty of time to stop and admire the views or to explore a town or village along the way.

For sheer diversity and points of interest this tour takes a lot of beating. A night in the beautiful old town of Pisa is followed by an easy ride out through a serene national park to the Versilian coast. Golden sandy beaches accompany your journey up the coast to the charming seaside resort of Viareggio. You then follow the course of the Serchio river up an ever-narrowing valley into the Apennines to the beautiful medieval village of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. Winding flagstone streets, stone arches, tiny piazzas and stunning alpine scenery make this a memorable stop.
By now the legs are warmed up so it’s time to take on a memorable climb up into the majestic Appenine National Park. Near the summit you’ll pass the famous Carrara marble quarries before enjoying a 30 kilometre downhill run to the chic and fashionable resort of Forte dei Marmi. The next day you leave Tuscany behind and cross into Liguria, passing vineyards and small fishing villages on your way to the bustling port town of La Spezia.
The final day of the tour is extra special. A 25 minute train ride delivers you to Monterosso, the village at the western end of the Cinque Terre National Park. From here you begin a scenic hike back through the park following an undulating track that passes the other famous pastel coloured villages of Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. The whole route is 19kms but you can shorten it by catching the train between the villages.
This holiday is rated moderate. The first day is flat and relatively easy but you will encounter climbs on each of the other days. On day 5 you will climb 550 metres in 20 kilometres between Castelnuovo di Garfagnana and top of the Appenine National Park. If you are concerned about this then we recommend you consider hiring an e-bike as this will take the sting out of these climbs making the overall route more leisurely.

Puglia is southern Italy’s land of plenty. A warm climate and incredibly rich soil make it a farmer’s dream. It’s not bad for cyclists either – the roads are quiet, the scenery is sublime and any hills are short and shallow.
Torre Sant Andrea - Salento
Your holiday starts in the neighbouring region of Basilicata, in the town of Matera. Abandoned for many years, the haunting, old, hillside town of Sassi (Stones) is a human warren of ancient troglodyte dwellings connected by an intricate maze of corridors and stairways. You can opt to spend one or two nights in this fascinating place before being transferred to Alberobello from where your cycling holiday will begin.
In Alberobello you can admire the charming, naturally air-conditioned Trulli houses, cleverly designed to keep occupants cool in the summertime. You’ll visit Ostuni, the ancient ‘white town’, offering splendid views across the countryside to the Adriatic coast. You’ll cycle along quiet lanes lined with dry-stone walls that wind their way through Puglia’s fertile countryside of ancient, gnarled olive groves, orchards and wheat fields.
The fortified town of Gallipoli marks the beginning of the coastal section of the holiday as the route leads you south along the Ionian coast’s gorgeous beaches. After a night at the very tip of Italy’s heel you turn north and head up the rugged Adriatic coast to the enchanting town of Otranto. As a fitting finale your last night is spent in the ornate and opulent town of Lecce. Lose yourself in the narrow streets and find the perfect restaurant to celebrate your Puglia adventure.
This leisurely cycling holiday can be enjoyed by anyone of average fitness. For the most part the terrain is level and any hills are short and not that challenging.

After enjoying a night in the beautiful old town of Lecce you will head south along quiet country roads to Gallipoli on the Ionian coast. Due to its strategic position, this old fortified town has a troubled and violent past but thankfully these days things are a lot calmer and its winding alleyways are a joy to explore.

You then head down the Ionian coastline to Santa Maria di Leuca located at the southern-most tip of the peninsula. The rugged and verdant landscape provides a dramatic backdrop to your ride south to Nubia. The going is easy but a quiet beach is never too far away if you fancy a cooling dip.
Around Trapani and Nubia the route leads you through the unique landscape of the region’s extensive salt flats. Flamingos wade in the warm, shallow waters and windmills stand like sentries guarding the precious mounds of salt harvested from the sea.Lose yourself in the narrow streets of Marsala old town and find a local bar to taste the town’s famous fortified wine exported around the world. Enjoy a fish supper in the fishing port of Mazara del Vallo and marvel at the majestic beauty and setting of ancient Selinunte on a raised bluff overlooking the sea.
This is a relatively easy route mostly along quiet lanes and roads but with the odd section along unmade paths. For the most part it is reasonably level terrain and apart from one exception on day three any hills are pretty gentle and not that long.

Pedal along quiet lanes and paths, past olive groves and vineyards, through the breathtakingly beautiful Umbrian Valley. Hilltop towns beckon from afar and any extra effort required to assail the flanks of these medieval gems is invariably paid back by their simple, timeless charm and wondrous views.
Spello
The many highlights of this classic route include Assisi, birthplace of St Francis, founder of the Franciscan order, Spello, a gorgeous little hilltop town that entrances all who enter and Spoleto, another medieval town with an impressive castle still largely contained within its fortifications.
You’ll also have the opportunity to visit Montefalco, to wonder at the view from the ‘Balcony of Umbria’, as well as Perugia the provincial capital with its wonderful Piazzas, Renaissance palaces and medieval churches.
And finally we have to mention the food and wine. If, like us, you appreciate dining well on your cycling holidays then you are in for a real treat. In a country that appreciates food so much, it is impressive to learn that Italians themselves revere this region for the quality of its cuisine. Similarly the local wines, such as Rosso di Montefalco and Sagrantino are also held in very high esteem and are likely to be a memorable element of a wonderful holiday.
The route adheres to the valley floor for the most part with some slightly hilly sections in parts. Apart from the steeper climbs to Montefalco (which can be avoided) and Assisi this tour is suitable for anyone with an average fitness level.
